Acting for Sketch & Scripted Comedy
Instructor: Jen Curran
This class is for anyone who wants to improve their acting chops when it comes to sketch comedy, funny and viral videos, comedic audition situations, sitcom scripts and other scripted comedy gigs. We will addresss the fact that great sketch comedy doesn't rely on strong writing alone - how it's performed can make or break it! We'll also explore the idea that many comedy scripts can be broken down into "sketch" beats to make them easier to interpret as an actor. You don't have to be a member of a sketch comedy group to take this class - whether you're interested in sketch comedy yourself, are a member of a group, or you just want to improve your ability to bring scripted comedy to the next hilarious level, this class will provide you with solid skills for performing sketch and scripted comedy on stage or screen. Learn how to become a versatile comedic actor by making specific, committed choices, identifying and playing with status, utilizing stage craft, making detailed decisions about your character (often without the help of a director), and bringing more of yourself and what you find funny to your performance. Most importantly, this class will teach you to let go and have fun with the roles you play. During the first class session, we will discuss the invidivual goals of each student so that we can tailor the course to everyone's specific needs. Good sketch comedy is well-written. Great sketch comedy is well-written and expertly performed.

Advanced True Storytelling
Instructor: Kevin Allison and Michelle Walson
Ever wonder how master storytellers like Mike Daisey, Mike Birbiglia, or the late Spalding Gray transform their real-life experiences into stories that entertain audiences for hours? In Advanced Storytelling, instructors Kevin Allison and Michelle Walson (creator/host and producer of the ECNY-award-winning storytelling show RISK!) will help you find the subtler nuances of your own unique voice and create pieces that go beyond mere anecdotes to tap into universal themes. Each student will develop at least two 12-15 minute stories, and while class time limits story length, the skills you’ll learn will apply to pieces of any scope. We will spend the majority of class time listening to and critiquing student stories. We’ll also listen to and analyze sample stories to learn more advanced techniques for structuring longer pieces such as plot/subplot, story within a story, and non-linear story structure. The class will culminate in two shows at The PIT for friends and family.
