Where should I watch Washington football now that Gibbs is back?

#1
Aside from one attempt to watch the "real time" online play updates of a game in 2000, I haven't any Washington football games that weren't broadcast on a network since I moved to New York.

But now that Joe Gibbs is back, I'm going to make an effort to see the games. What do other Washington-area exiles in the area do? Should I go to sports bars? Buy some sort of cable package? Help me decide.

Being an avid Titans fan, I feel your pain. Being in a market with the Giants, the Jets, the Patriots, and the Bills there's always a huge chance your team doesn't get shown up here unless they're playing one of those teams.

But it all depends on how you like to watch football. There are a lot of bars that have the NFL All Access type package where they get a feed from all the games. I personally prefer maybe going in with a few people and getting the NFL All Access to your apartment. But that's just me.

Go Titans!

You pretty much can only watch them when they are on Monday Night Football (ABC) or Sunday Night Football (ESPN) or when the play the Giants or Jets.

If the Giants or Jets are on a bye week you might get to see another game, but there is no way to know for sure in advance. I am sure there are some bars that show all games (none near you in Astoria) - and they usually will advertise it on a chalkboard or something in front. When I lived in the UES there would be signs all the time saying that the bar showed ALL NFL games. Is there a certain area you will want to go to watch these games?

I'd be willing to go to Manhattan, but I'd prefer a place that isn't completely filled with sports fans watching different games. I don't like the loud cheering from another game interrupting my game when nothing is happening.

Is there a way to get a limited NFL package with just the team I want, or do I have to buy the whole league?

It was especially bad before this year, as no one would air the Washington games when New York teams were off, since the team was so sucky.

six games that will be televised for sure, and a couple others will probably sneak through, 4:15 starts indicated national TV games, though they could be bumped by local interest (giants, jets). The NFL package is (unless it changed) around $240 for the season, so you are looking at $240 dollars to see a maximum of 10 games.

You are better of finding a like minded skin fan to share the cost or seeing them in bars.

hope you find a way to cheer for your racist team.

go cowboys,
brandon.

ps - one of the Satelite radio companies is offering all the games FYI

Brandon - have you bought an NFL package in the past?

What sort of feed do you get on the games (in terms of announcers)? If it's a nationally televised game (or locally), is the NFL package blacked out in favor of local coverage? Or would it be the same coverage either way?

Usually, in Maryland, I like to watch the footage on TV but listen to the radio local radio announcers (partly because we've had the lower tier announcers recently due to our team's awfulness).

If I pay $240 for 10 games, that's like $24 per game. But if I sit in a bar for three hours, I'm likely to spend at least that much. I guess the question is whether the savings of eating and drinking at home (and the convenience) balance out the cost.

Also, is any of the package refundable? Like if Dan Snyder fires Joe Gibbs halfway through the season, could I somehow cancel and get refunded for half a season?

Erik if you get the package I will come over to watch the Redskins beat the Browns and pay the 12 dollar fee for my half of the game. Also I will drink all your beer and not pay for that.

Kevin, Erik, Astorians et al.

McCann's on Ditmars and 37th Street shows all games. They have Sunday Ticket.
They also have a $15 pitcher and order of wings special you can stretch over 3 hours if you are disciplined.

I also get Sunday Ticket every year to watch Buffalo. You can come over if it doesn't conflict with the Bills.

i would come watch the cowboys game. and do the same. for whatever bizarre reason*, even though i'm from dc too, i am a cowboys fan. i grew up hating the skins. especially joe theisman and john riggins. can't STAND them. but i like joe gibbs. and darrell green.

who does madden do games with now? i noticed it wasn't pat summerall anymore.

*--i have a big brother 10 years older. me and my brother idolized him so we copied everything he did. he loved the vikings, who moved and became the cowboys. and the whole shelkey family because american's team fans.

also, let's be stupid and paint our faces for this game too.

Sunday Ticket games are with all the Fox, CBS or whoever has the games now, announcers.

I prefer Bar None on 2nd Ave since I've been watching Chiefs games there since October 2001, but there are some annoying (though mildly amusing) Vikings fans there that claim the bar as their own.

Webs... i'm down with mccans... also i would gladly pay 12 bucks to sit in erics home and see the cowboys play. I don't drink beer so you would save money there, however i will break something if the boys lose.

and shelks, Madden does Monday night Football now... Summerall was forced into retirement by fox a couple years back... and madden bolted... ESPN just hired him (Summerall) to do four pre-season games while Mike Patrick recovers from surgery.

This should be a interesting year for the cowboys, skins, eagles, giants because they should all expect to be much better than last year.

In Astoria, I've watched the cowboys for the last 4 years at Broadway Station, which is a bar about 100 yrds from the Broadway stop on the N/W. There's always a cadre of Dallas fans, and for some reason a huge Miami contingent. I like it cause it's so close. The worst part is you have to get there early if you want a good seat. Even worse, half the time you can't hear the game. I think I'll try Mcann's this year.

DirecTV has one year left on their exclusive contract with NFL Sunday Ticket.
