Where can I find a cheap couch in this city?

And I mean dirt cheap. Really really cheap. And we've tried walking around checking curbsides already.

This living on folding chairs isn't working anymore.

Get the best one you can afford, seriously. A truly shitty couch will just make your butt hurt, and you will regret the money you spent very quickly.

If you scope out the OK stores like Jennifer Convertibles or Crate & Barrel, sometimes you can score a floor sample for waaaay cheaper, with only minor dings, for a few hundred bucks. If you move, you can turn around, sell it later and recoup some cash.

Or try Ikea, although they have a delivery charge, the stuff is still way cheaper and pretty good. Got a friend with a vehicle?

Although I lived on a futon couch for a few years, I still maintain that they suck. If you have to do it, go to Economy Foam & Futon on Houston and Avenue A. Get a metal frame one, and the most expensive multilayer futon you can find, seriously.

You pretty much don't want upholstered furniture you find on the street.

Trust me.

TRUST me.

Do NOT take upholstered furniture that you don't know where it's from.

I would not buy a couch if there were the possibility that I would be moving within a year. Especially I would not buy a New York-priced couch if there were the chance I would be moving to someplace that sells North Carolina-priced couches.

Also, TRUST TONY!

I got a nice couch off of Craig's List. And I agree with GoldDustWoman about getting the best you can afford -- it can be a hassle getting rid of a sofa once you are sick of it. The last one that we had, somehow we couldn't figure out how to get it out of the apartment, even though we had somehow gotten it in.

I totally recommend craigslist.

Also as an alternative, check out the Jennifer Leather/Convertibles "outlet" on 5th Ave. and 22nd street.

They've got slightly defective couches, stuff that was refused on delivery, etc.. etc.. I've seen some really nice things there but they get snatched up right away. It's definitely worth checking out.

Do not take ANY furniture off the street - upholstered or otherwise.
Bedbugs like to hide in the cracks and joints of wooden or metal furniture.
New York is in the midst of a bedbug epidemic.
Gone are the days of free furniture....

thanks everybody. Yeah, we decided against street couches some time ago. It was just a fantasy born of desparation. Has anyone had luck with the salvation army?

Theres a "chic" thrift store in NY called something like "17 on 17." I forget exactly.

I live on Roosevelt Island where there is a high turnover of upper-middle class, and you can always find a sofa for sale. Check the community bulletin board columns all over the island or the laundry rooms of the nicer buildings. I've seen two very decent couches this week for under $150.
