Where can I buy a used laptop?

So I'm looking to get an iBook, used, refurbished, happy. Mac doesn't stock or sell them anymore since it's old tech. Since they're old and discontinued, I'm looking to spend less than $400 on one, with 60 GB of memory. It can be done, they're all over eBay.

I'm wondering, is there any place in the city that sells refurbished laptops? I really wouldn't know where to start looking, other that wandering the streets. Has anyone found a good place (online even) to buy a cheap laptop?

I...am shamed that I do not have one.

MacMall has no iBooks and Powermax has them for about twice as much as I'm looking to spend.

Craigslist has a few, but I'm more interested in going through a store.

By the way, if you're set on the iBook: from experience, I would advise you to check it carefully for problems with the display cable. It's a known problem where the cable, which is routed through that hinge, starts to lose connection under the stress of bending with the hinge. The symptom is that the display craps out when as you swivel the hinge open and closed. When I had mine repaired it cost about $150.

TekServe on 23rd is like the indie Apple store. If anybody sells used iBooks, they might or they might know where to send you.

You could also go to eBay and limit the search to sellers in NYC. Not a store, but not a shipment from Des Moines, either.

Why would you buy an iBook? Software for pre-Intel Macs is being made less and less. Get a Macbook instead. It may cost you a little more, but it's the difference between getting something that is never going to have any new programs, and something that you'll be able to use for years to come. Getting an iBook now makes only slightly more sense than buying an HD-DVD player.

Depends on the use. If he just wants to write, an iBook would totally do the trick, and for probably 1/4 to 1/3 the cost of a Macbook. It should be able to run 10.5 or at least 10.4.10, and while it's not a speed demon, it's gonna do fine for a little e-mailing, web surfing and writing. Hell, my iBook G4 ran iMovie, Photoshop and InDesign just great. Again, not with lightning speed, but definitely usable.

Also, the 12" iBook is lighter and more compact than any current Apple laptop (except the Air, which I'd bet isn't being considered here).

...um, I have a 14" iBook G4 w/an 80 gig HD and 1.5 GB of RAM I'll sell.
Send me an email with the details, James, I think that sounds awesome. How much are you asking for it? And I'm assuming it works fine...

I'm really only going to be using it for websurfing, writing, and keeping mp3s on. Maybe do a little photoshop work on it that doesn't require an advanced version of photoshop.
