I work on the computer and my mood is improved when there is some background noise. iTunes isn't working for me: my computer's speakers are lousy and I don't like being completely responsible for the musical selection.

My alarm clock has a radio in it; I might as well put it to work. Does anybody still listen to the radio? Can you recommend a station?

Don't bother asking me what sort of music I like; I'm indecisive and that will take all day. Tell me what radio station you like to listen to and why.

99.5 Democracy Now
Sure you could listen to NPR, but this is local.

They even have a show for hackers, Wed 7pm

I fall asleep nearly every night to WNYC. At night it's all classical. I won't sleep to it when it's news.

Except, sometimes I'll download On the Media, one of their shows, and listen to it as I go to sleep.

I prefer sleeping to music rather than silence.

RXP cheerleader here! 101.9 FM. I need more/less stimulation than classical provides and a variety of rock fits my bill. Beatles to Beastie Boys. Rolling Stones to Radiohead. New Order to the National (oh, wait). Also, they like my favorite songs from the '90s e.g. "Cannonball".

Plus, rocking out occasionally at my desk helps me forget I have repetitive strain injury (whee!).

I second the RXP recommendation. Any station that plays Squeeze and XTC is okay by me.

Why not run radio streams through iTunes? I listen to WOXY, Indie 103.1 (out of LA), Ghetto Radio (a strange pop hybrid station), and KCRW that way. Make a radio streams playlist.

Boooooooooo! Way to deny the spirit of my question.

First of all, I already said my computer speakers are lousy.

Second, the engineer in me (which is by necessity in charge of things when I am working) is disturbed by the inefficiency of TCP packets traveling across the Internet and occupying bandwidth into my home so that a process on my computer must compete with other processes, like my Objective-C compiler, for CPU cycles to decompress those packets into an audio signal --- when I own another, cheaper box that uses a lot less energy to do the same thing.

Third, I prefer to source my background audio locally.

Now go back to driving around in your SUV and stomping on wildlife with your big carbon footprints, Matt Little. To everyone else, thank you for your helpful replies.
