The Film Version
In 1992, Fine Line Features funded, produced and released the film version of THE VERY IMPORTANT ONE-ACT PLAY FESTIVAL. It was a glorious experiment directed by Mike Leigh who, as we know, can direct the shit out of improvisors. And it was a good cast too: Timothy Spall, Jim Broadbent -- the usual Leigh actors, but it also had a super-mega cast of Hollywood's best and brightest, including Julia Roberts, Bruce Willis (who knew he could improvise), Denzel Washington, and Marlon Brando in a rare screen appearance (other than in that shithole called "Christopher Columbus: The Discovery")
This truly awesome film was nominated for 13 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, which it lost to Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven". Oh well...
