Round 1 Update

Answers to come later, but so far we have:

Scores out of 30: 13 for the film, 13 for the references and 4 (I decided that scores out of 30 made more sense than 31 so not 5 anymore) point 100% accuracu bonus

Retardical Sam (who has made a mockery of the title of this journal by getting them all bang on within a day): 35 (see below for why)
Deb_u_taunt: 30
Vincent Freeman (who you?):30
ScottyB: 30
Sehra: 25. (I'm not giving you the tyrell corporation I'm afraid, otherwise you'd be on 30 too)
Minou: 23
Tenth: 7
Dizzy: 6
Corpho:6

You can, of course, continue trying to improve your score umtil I have posted the answers...Minou I know that this will appeal to you because I just *know* you are not going to be happy about not being top!

I've also decided to add an additional 5 point bonus for the FIRST person to score 100% in each round.

George Dawes, What are the scorees?

Full Houses:

Retardical Sam: 35
Deb_u_taunt: 30
Vincent Freeman::30
ScottyB: 30
Sehra: 30 (new Tyrell Corporation answer accepted!)
Minou: 30
Tango: 30*
L D: 30

And the rest:

Tenth: 7
Dizzy: 6*
Corpho:6
Lori_sunshhine: 6

Technically neither got the Star Wars one exactly right, as they both got the wrong episode, but I wasn’t paying attention when I gave Dizzy the point, and then it seemed harsh to deny Tango if I was allowing Diz.

Gonna have to try to toughen the next round up:

Answers: (with explanations courtesy of L D who gave the most detail – far more than I would have done)

 Duran Duran: (Barberalla) -Mad scientist intent on conquering the universe, generally out >to cause hate and discontent. Eaten by the Magmous, from movie Barberella

 Travis- ... (Paris, Texas) the main character in Wim Wender's "Paris, Texas". Travis wanders out of the desert not knowing who he is. His brother finds him, and helps to pull his memory back of the life he led before he walked out on his wife and son four years before. As his memory returns, he makes contact with various people from his past.

 Heaven 17-(A Clockwork Orange)... a fictional band/an album in a record shop visited by Malcom McDowell's character in Kubrick's film "Clockwork Orange".

 The Tyrell Corporation-(Blade Runner) Blade Runner movie – Tyrell Corp. Nexus-6 model replicants-The new model of android, designed for offworld labour. Unfortunately, they're too good, too close to human. Almost impossible to tell from real except by using test to detect their lack of empathy (the human quality). Understandably angry at only being "alive" for three years, they escape back to Earth and kill a bunch of people.

 Black Rebel Motorcycle club- (The Wild One)... from the 1954 movie "The Wild One" starring Marlon Brando. The "Black Rebel Motorcycle Club", or short "Black Rebels", are a gang of 40 motorcyclists who gatecrash a legitimate motorcycle race. They are eventually thrown out, but one of the gang steals the second prize trophy and gives it to their leader, Johnny. The gang then ride into Wrightsville, where they cruise up and down the main street, and pile into Bleekers – the local bar. The owner of the bar, the Sheriff, is happy to let the bikers spend their money, so does nothing to break up any disturbances. Johnny falls for the Sheriffs daughter, and tries to impress her with the trophy. When a rival gang ride into town, trouble is just around the corner.

 Black Sabbath- (Black Sabbath)... a 1963 horror movie starring Boris Karloff Plot: A trilogy of three horror stories. "The Drop of Water" concerns a nurse who steals a ring off a dead spiritualist, only to have the corpse seek revenge. "The Telephone" features a prostitute who is terrorized by phone calls from a dead client. "The Wurdalak" stars Boris Karloff as a vampire who feeds on the blood of his loved ones.

 Mogwai-... (Gremlins) movie (1984) All Gremlins start life as Mogwai. Mogwai are cuddly, furry creatures about one foot tall. They generally are quite mischevious, and will attempt to become Gremlins if possible.

 Moloko- (A Clockwork Orange)... the milk drink in Stanley Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange" (1971)

 They Might Be Giants- (They Might Be Giants)... a 1971 movie. Plot: They Might be Giants chronicles the adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in modern day New York City. The fact that Sherlock Holmes (George C. Scott) is a psychotic paranoid and Dr. Watson (Joanne Woodward) is a female psychiatrist fascinated by his case is almost beside the point. Dr. Watson follows Holmes across Manhattan and is, against her better judgement, drawn into the master detective's world of intrigue and danger. This is a sweet, goofy and fairly romantic film that asks the questions "Who's reality is right...and does it really matter?" ALSO: Line spoken by Don Quixote when asked why he tilted windmills ‘because the might be giants’ inspired film title, AND a ventriloquist act of a friend of the band, which is their direct inspirartion (thanks to R_Sam for the additional info)

 Mudhoney-..(Mudhoney)a Russ Meyer Movie (1965) The movie is set in 1933, in the midst of the Depression and Prohibition. Calif, a stranger with a past walks into Spooner, Missouri on his way from Michigan to California. He hires on with Lute Wade to earn some travelling money, but gets entangled in a bad family situation: Lute's daughter is married to Sidney, a good-for-nothing drunk that frequents the rural equivalent of a whorehouse and beats his wife and is just waiting for Lute to kick the bucket to get his money. When Sidney and a local wacko preacher begin orchestrating a smear campaign against Calif, he finds it difficultto conceal his past and his growing affection for Sidney's wife.

 Nerfherder- (The Empire Strikes Back) a line in "Empire Strikes Back" where Princess Leia calls Han Solo a "half-witted, scruffy looking nerf herder."

 My Bloody Valentine- (My Bloody Valentine)... a 1981 horror movie by George Mihalka Plot: There's a big valentine-party planned in the little miningtown Valentine's Bluff. It is the first valentine party in 20 years, because then there was an accident in the mine, and the accident happened because the men responsible for the security was at the party. The sole surviving miner killed them, and told the town NEVER to arrange a valentine party again. The party begins, and so does the killing...

 The Unbelievable Truth- (The Unbelievable Truth)... a film by Hal Hartley (1990) After serving time for murder, Josh Hutton returns to his home town where>me meets Audry Hugo. No one can remember exactly what Josh did, but they are all wary of him, especially Audry's father.

Round 2 Update

No answers yet.

But score so far:

Sehra: 22
Retardical_Sam: 21
Old_lady: 21
L D: 21 (but ‘Café Flesh’ was lucky!)
Dreams21: 17
Minou: 10 out of the 11 you answered (and I know you’ve said you’ll send the rest when you get another chance to try)
Dizzy: 10. (and the only person to get Mildred’s correct)

No full house yet this time. Makes me feel better about the title of the journal.

NB:

 The Green Man in the film ‘The Green Man’ is a hotel, not a’ bar, pub, club or restaurant’. Anyone that gave that answer is welcome to try again.

 Café Eighties is actually called ‘Café 80’s’, which might help

 Cantina wasn’t much of a clue, and sent some of you off on the wrong tack, it’s actually the ‘Mos Eisley Cantina’ (which should be as good as telling you the answer)

 There are some answers I’ve been given that weren’t what I was looking for but may prove to be acceptable alternatives. Once I’ve posted my answers, anyone who still thinks that their answer was correct can point me towards where they got it from and I’ll decided whether to accept it or not (ooh…the power…)

 Dizzy is getting a point for this: ‘Café Flesh – ‘Rinse Dream’ What? This is a porn movie burnsy. Surreal post-apocalyptic culture setting, where only 1% of the population are able >to have sex (watched by the other 99%’ even though it is not the answer I was looking for and I’ve never seen or heard of it ever, honestly guv’nor. It was just in my bag because I was looking after it for a school friend.

 Apparently a couple of these are real places, not fictional. Although neither ‘The Blue Parrot’ or ‘Rick’s Café’ in Key West count as ‘real’ as they were both named after the fictional bars.

AND:

Tango: Not sure how you’ve done yet, I forwarded the emails to my work account to do this and yours got blocked for ‘excessive profanity’ so I can’t tell you how you did yet! I’ll try to update you over the weekend.

Scores Update

I'll give the answers a couple more days, but here's the latest:

L D: 23 (but ‘Café Flesh’ was lucky!)
Vincent Freeman: 23
Sehra: 22
ScottyB: 22
Retardical_Sam: 21
Old_lady: 21
Tango: 19
Dreams21: 17
Minou: 10 out of the 11 you answered (and I know you’ve said you’ll send the rest when you get another chance to try)
Dizzy: 10. (No longer the only person to get Mildred’s correct)

No one has got 'The Tall Man' yet...but that's not surprising as I fucked up and trusted a source i shouldn't have. This round is now out of 24 and 6 bonus points for 100% correct answers and my sincere apologies to anyone that has spent too long trying to figure it out!

We have a winner!

As I wrote that L D emailed me the last answer apart from 'The Tall Man'

She now has all 24, so the updated scores are:

L D: 30
Vincent Freeman: 23
Sehra: 22
ScottyB: 22
Retardical_Sam: 21
Old_lady: 21
Tango: 19
Dreams21: 17
Minou: 10 out of the 11 you answered (and I know you’ve said you’ll send the rest when you get another chance to try)
Dizzy: 10. (No longer the only person to get Mildred’s correct)

Also, I may be wrong, but I haven't allowd 'Phantasm' as the answer to 'The Tall Man' as I was under the impression that it was a character, not a bar.

Answers soon I promise

I’m giving a couple more days to allow Sehra to see if she can get her last two as she said she was going to try, then the answers will come along with the overall scores to date.

If anyone can think up a fair way of scoring this that doesn’t punish people for missing a week or for getting the 100% bonus on a round with less points available, then let me know!

Scores out of 30 (1 point per correct answer = 24, 6 point 100% accuracy bonus) + 5 points for the first to get 100% - which I forgot to add to L D’s score last time…

L D: 35
Vincent Freeman: 30
ScottyB: 30
Minou: 30
Tango: 30
Sehra: 22
Retardical_Sam: 21
Old_lady: 21
Dreams21: 17
Dizzy: 10. (No longer the only person to get Mildred’s correct)

By the way, Steve Parmenter is the name that I used when I set up the losersdiary account, as I didn’t know if I’d stick around here or if I could trust the site not to fill my in box with spam. Those of you that know me other than as ‘burns1’, I assure you the name you know me by is my real name!

Now stop asking about ‘Steve’!

Minou: 30

Round 3: The Oliver Stone ‘Fire the goddamn researcher’ round

Complete the quote (or at least give the gist of what it says) (5 points)
Name the film and Director (5 points)
Tell me what is wrong with the completed quote (5 points)

100% accuracy bonus – 5 points
first to get 100% - 5 points.

Total: 20 points + bonus

This, I think, will be a fairly straightforward round (It’s not the one I was planning, that will come next week when I’ve rechecked everything).

The Quote:

Round 3 Answers and scores

Answer

In Italy for thirty years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder
and bloodshed – they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo, da Vinci and the
Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love, five hundred years of
democracy and peace, and what did they produce? The cuckoo clock!"

The Third Man, Dir: Carol Reed.

What's wrong? The Cuckoo Clock was invented in Germany.

Sehra: 25 points (first correct answer)
Dizzy: 20 points
L D: 20 points
R_Sam: 20 points
Tango: 20 points
Vincent Freeman: 20 points.

I'll do the overall scores and the next question later today.
