the moving to LA thread

Andy,

Where we're moving in Los Feliz is really chill and within walking distance of essentials, too. I am totally adverse to using my car everyday if I don't have to, so I am checking out the train lines www.mta.net
They just opened up the Gold Line - that's four train lines now and the Red Line is right near my new apt.
WeHo is very, very gay - imagine 8th Avenue in Chelsea at 3pm on a Sunday. Reconsider that hood.

Cool, I've decided against West Hollywood, everyone told me that it's not the ideal place to live after I told them what I'm looking for. A handful of people did reccomend Los Feliz though, so far that got the most votes, so I'm going to check out a few areas today and tommorow.....I'm definitely going to see what Los Feliz is all about....

my epic, self-indulgent thoughts on LA--
jamie and i moved here in January of 2002. we are in our second apartment. we got the first one through Westside rentals who aren't amazing, but as monopolies go, they're pretty responsible and reliable. the apartment had black mold and really thin walls. oh, that's something. these buildings are naturally not built for winter, and as such you can often hear your neighbors. very clearly. we had upstairs neighbors who fucked and listened to Marilyn Manson at all hours and at remarkable volume. i went upstairs to complain one time and i wore my Sonic Youth shirt so the guy wouldn't think i was some square who didn't get the kids. that's right. i wore a ten year old sonic youth shirt to prove my hipness. I AM AN IDIOT.

rents are cheaper. cars are mandatory. i didn't even know how to drive when I moved here and jamie in her infinite patience chauffered me around. i also took the bus a lot. but you need the independence that a car will give you. the subway is clean and lovely but does not go to the following neighborhoods: Santa Monica, West Hollywood, Century City, Culver City, Beverly Hills, Venice Beach, Van Nuys, you get the picture. Let me make this clear: YOU CAN NOT RELY ON THE SUBWAY FOR AUDITIONS. the bus is a crap shoot, too, but at least it goes to more destinations.

Should you also need to learn how to drive (why, John? We're not idiots like you.) try Melrose Driving School. Ask for Luis. His patience is exceeded only by his pedagogical skill.

don't get a $1500 muscle car. the engine will always need work and will be murder to get serviced and will end up costing you forever. I know, I know, you want a 65 mustang with fins. we all do. spend 10 grand on a used Honda and it will never let you down.

Andy mentioned the area around the El Capitan. We're near that. The foothills are lovely -- the flat part, south of Hollywood blvd, is hit or miss. some nice blocks, some really desolate ones. but you can walk around a little bit. ditto Echo Park. ditto silverlake. ditto Los Feliz. ditto the really hasidic part of Beverly Hills (around Pico and Robertson) although good luck trying to get a sandwich after sundown.

don't expect to come here and just start auditioning. you're gonna need an agent. once you have an agent, things will open up like they never could in NY or chicago. but you need that agent. how to get an agent is for another thread, although one person shows always seem to help.

IO and Groundlings are apples and oranges. Groundlings takes MUCH longer to get through levels. Like, years.

the grocery stores and movie theaters are beautiful.

those are some thoughts. but as William Goldman once said "Nobody knows anything. especially not matt and ben."

rock over and out.

Now I like Melrose....it's a long strip full of little stores and places to eat....even though it's very different from NYC, walking that strip kind of reminds me of Manhattan a little bit....and even though I need a car, I'd like to be able to walk to that.....I signed up for Westsiderentals and the only bad thing is that there were only 6 places available in the Melrose area....

Melrose gets pricey for just that reason

as does the Sunset Strip

looming ahead

Sam, I'm so jealous and excited for you. Keep us updated on your adjustment there. Also keep a sleeping bag unfurled for me.

First of all, what fantasy land am i living in where I thought at car would cost $600?! TEN GRAND for a car? John, i thought you maybe mistyped and added an extra "0" by accident. then I asked around and that's the price...guess I have to liquidate my dowry early. holy shit!

So the new news is that our show was extended (and then maybe moving to LA?) so I have no fucking clue when we're going to scout out a home there...but hopefully someone will be hired to help us. I was psyched to look around New Years? Also now in the strange and completely intimidating process of picking between agents/agencies. Trying to select the most powerful Svengali-ish shark-human with many assistants and a iron grip on bi-coastal scenes. the worst part: EVERY AGENT SEEMS GREAT!! (I could spend the rest of my time on earth with agents. they're all strangers who think you're going places and want to be your friend. I want to replace all my real friends with agents)

And that still leaves the issue of the road trip.
Road tripping to LA:
Anyone done it? Brenda (my room-mate, move-mate, show-mate) and I have been discussing it. I would love to see Civil War sites and Vegas and some National Parks too, but I can't tell whether it's a huge time suck and the route too circuitous, and you grow to hate your car, your companion and even this lovely nation. Pros: We'd buy a car here and have one right off the bat. We'd get to make road-trip mixes. Cons: Does the trip kill your car? Especially if it's used, I'm a bit worried.

I also realize that my entire notion of what Los Angeles is like is based on the movies Pulp Fiction, LA Confidential, Get Shorty and Mulholland Drive...and the Counting Crowes song "Long December". Hazy, violent, retro, with fast food restaurants on every block.

Can't wait?

Sam, I'll tell you what my friend told me, re coats. Bring what you would wear at the end of October in NY. That's about as cold as it gets here. Unless you plan to go skiing a lot.

I live in the end of the barrell of the gun that is West Hollywood. Cross this street you're in Hollywood, cross that street you're in Hollywood, cross...you get the picture. I'm telling you, Hollywood (around El Capitan) is coming up, and you would not be dumb to rent there now. Above Hollywood blvd, (North into the hills) it gets gradually more expensive the higher up you go.
I like where I live because I can walk EVERYWHERE. I'm 2 blocks from 2 grocery stores, about 6 blocks from Grauman's and the Hollywood and Highland area(and all the movie theatres you could want), about 5 blocks from Hancock Park (looks like Evanston), about 3 blocks from the Melrose strip (without Melrose prices), about a mile and change from The Grove/Farmer's Market (aka happiest place on earth) and that whole cool Fairfax district area. Walking distance to the Sunset Strip or short cab ride. If you go North of me, it gets pricier, if you go South of me it gets pricier, if you go West of me it gets pricier...the only direction to go from me is East. And as earlier stated, you have to be careful, but the deals are there.
My advice, even though you love Westside Rentals, is to drive up and down the streets of the area you want to live in looking for For Rent signs, with your cel phone. That's how you'll find the hidden gems. I didn't even KNOW my place was rent controlled!
So come for a week, I'd say.

Mindy, my experience looking for places around New Years sucks ass. Try to come earlier. OR later!! People come here for pilot season around January, and it gets crazy and landlords know they have the upper hand and things get snatched out from under your nose and...and...
Around New Year's no good.

I am going to complete a restoration project in Kansas City for a few months and divide my time between there and LA, the money is too good not to - I am making the greatest sacrifice I know of - giving up my NYC rent-stabilized shithole. Don't ask about it, it's going to a friend. KC is only 2 hours by plane to LAX and SOuthwest flies there CHEAP! THere is a stellar beauty to LA that seems so condusive to following your follies. My writing partner lives on Wilcox and has a patio - a fucking PATIO - last time we sat out til 3am just chatting about our script with no distractions! No wonder Tina is so popular out there.

I too hate to drive but will get my road rage practice in KC - which is just another LA without palm trees or Industry folk. Oh, and chubby people, lots o' chubby folk in KC. But I digress...

THe editor of the social column I read is in LA and has taken some lovely pictures. Heres the link.

Cannot wait to be in LA or more precisely, out of NYC. Far too distracted to do anything of substance.

Andy, you need a writer for anything? I'll work free for you.

Thanks! I think I'm going to give Standup a shot in LA but I'm going to keep doing shorts when I'm in LA. I'll do the random, stupid ones that I've been doing but I also might try to write some longer, more thought out stuff, with an actual cast and what not........So when I do those I might need a co-writer or sometimes someone to punch up my retarded scripts. I've wanted to do this type of thing in the past but laziness prevented me from it.

Wow that was yesterday!
Oh yeah, Beachwood Canyon is great. I lived in my friends studio there when I first got here. But I couldn't afford an apartment up that way. You must go up there and have breakfast at the Beachwood Cafe, (they close by 6 pm, so that's all I've ever had there, breakfast). Everyone is very friendly up there and will tell you where the Oz Garden is if you ask them.
This Garden is amazing and beautiful. Only folks who have a key can get in, if the owner's have not opened the gate, which they do. But even if it's not open, you can see from the street what's in there. I think the street is Ledgewood.

Brutal how? I went to see a couple of people at the Improv and they kind of inspired me to try it out.......They've been doing it for years and years and they're pros but still......it seems like it would be fun.

well unless you are a seasoned pro you don't get to do it in real clubs, you get to do it in coffeehouses, generally with other comics who will either not watch and give feedback or leave the room. Then, you may get to do showcases or bringer shows where you have to bring 5 paying people or so otherwise they don't book you again.

you make no money doing it.

though are on tv, which means one of the clubs might put you up a little more readily

I've tried a few times in NY and saw that there are a lot of bringers and shitty open mic nights.......how is that different from LA? Is it harder to get a regular spot or something?

my time in NY was brief, but there was at least some camaradarie amongst comics. Older comics giving advice, people going out after shows and talking and shit.

none of that here.

and yeah, it's tough to get a regular spot here at a club. plenty of places to play if you can get people in and keep it going.

You gonna hang at IO West when you get here?

Any folks moving here within a week or so? I need to get rid of Scamp. Here's what I posted at the IO West post board:

I am looking for a good home for my 82 Toyota Supra, known as Scamp. Had him since I moved here, 5 1/2 years. Bought him off the street. If anyone needs A CAR, for light duty (he's old), I will let him go for $500. He's got issues, but what senior citizen doesn't? If you wanted to put a few hundred into him, you would definitely get another few years out of him, and a great stereo/radio/cassette(I think it's just a wire). PM me if interested. I'll wait a week or 10 days before I donate him.

I am moving in 6 days, but Scamp sounds a little too old for my taste. You see, I can't stand anything that was made before 1990. Including...

-The Berlin Wall
-80's Hair band POISON
-Penicillin
-Hitler

A friend of a friend is a stand-up but does her own showcases or shows and that attracts attention. I think she might be well-known.

Her name is Nancy Kissam - look out for her.
