The Lottery

For those of you at IO you know what Im talking about. For those of you who arn't, its basically a group of students (I think one from each of the five levels) who get chosen to rehearse every tuesday night with a few more seasoned improvisors. They don't get to perform, but essentially its just a free class.

Now then, Ive talked to alot of people and its as though nobody likes the idea. Im just wondering what your impressions are. If anyone can get more detailed (if need be) in the description feel free.

IO's Lottery

From my understanding, you do get to perform. You rehearse a couple of times and then you perform with seasoned improvisers on Tuesdays. I'm not sure of the specifics as far as how much you rehearse, or how much you perform, but I do know you get to do both.

Why wouldn't any student who isn't on a team like this idea? It sounds like a great opportunity to learn and grow from working with IO veterans.

Well.....

I've never posted on this board....so if it's all messed up......sorry

About your "lottery" post Greg/treefrog.......i'm not sure if your as educated about it as you should be.

1)These teams will perform starting July 17th at 10:15(or so) at the IO

2)I don't dispute that you've talked to alot of people....but.....Alex and I(producers of the LOTTERY) have had alot of people come up to us and offer there help for this show. Everyone seems to think that this will be an interesting/fun experience.

3)There will be a rehearsal......but it'll be on our own time

The thing about this show is this.......

We are trying to get new improvisers to meet old improvisers/veteran improvisers....to if NOTHING else....meet them and hopefully "open" a line of dialogue between them. So there isn't so much judging between people in this community. We don't know what's going to happen. We think that it'll be a great experience for everyone involved. Does this answer any or some of your questions???

Im sorry Andy, when I first heard of it I was told there wouldn't be a perfromance. Anyway I agree with everyone so far, I have no problem with this thing, but soooooo many people have told me its a waste of there time. Im just curious why. Now I don't know about this breaking down the wall between new improvisers and veterans, I think thats done through being a nice person. But I do think the expeirence is great for anyone in the program. Blah Blah Blah.

More

Why, is it a waste of there time??.....is your question

Well..my guess is people have nothing better to do but do alot of "talking". These are probably the people that are always complaining about the "politics" of the IO.

Get out there on Tuesday and come and support the students......

It might be bad one week and great the next.......who knows....

ANYONE can e-mail me with any questions....at all....no matter how stupid you might think they are....

i agree

it will be a great opportunity for veteran improvators to show how much better they are than the new improvators.

at least they won't be on the computer,

turn your's off now.

Sounds like an interesting experiment to me! One of the more rewarding experiences of taking a class with Miles in Level 2 at IO back, oh, six years ago when I had a lot more hair, was when he would literally join scenes. I thought that was a great learning tool.

My only hope is that as many students as humanly possible could benefit from this sort of thing. I'm unfamiliar with the great experiment as a whole. perhaps audience members and students would benefit from a discussion afterwards of pointing out what worked and why, what were good moves and why. I for one would like to see that sort of post-performance dissection.

Rob,
Thanks for the thoughts on the subject. We hope the experience is rewarding for all involved; the cast of students, our guest improvisers, and the audience. A post-show dissection is an interesting idea, what we hope -- that this show is more about experience than experiment. We hope the work will inspire discussion amongst people without formally dissecting students' work in a larger forum.
But we'll see, as the show progesses, this idea may take form, and thanks for the suggestion and interest in the show, hope to see you there.
The Lottery opens tommorrow night, July 17th

I went to go check out the Lottery last night, and it was great! The level one lottery pick was a guy in my class so i was extra proud. It was great to see the wiley veteran improvisers take care of the rookies, and the rookies hold thier own too. Also me being new to IO its hard to mesh with the veteran imrovisers so i applaud this effort to get people from all levels together. I suggest everyone in Chicago check this show out and i just hope im selected in the next lottery.
