Gonna lose it.
is this possible?

Hey all, does anyone know if it is possible to make a good and consistent living (30,000+ a year coming in relatively regularly from week to week) by signing up to every possible temping and catering agency and tutoring?

I am graduating from college in a couple months and that is my game plan for making a living while I pursue a career as an entertainer. Crazy? Smart? Help! Thanks.

i think unless u specialize in something catering pays more than temping. but if u r great at graphics/quark or a proofreader it may be equal. so yes.

The House/Night Manager answers to the General Manager. Unfortunately, there is no flexibility in shift hours or days. Ideal candidate is a self-starter with excellent people and customer service skills. Candidate should be a multi-tasker, efficient problem solver, and a strong leader. In addition, the candidate should be well organized with strong computer skills (Mac proficient). Prior House staff experience is a must, as is knowledge of lighting, sound, and visual equipment (projectors). Knowledge of and interest in the New York comedy scene a plus.

^I had kind of planned on doing that when I move, but I'm starting to think it may not be the best plan as I have no special skills and am a dropout. (I should add I never hoped for 30,000)

I've now decided on waitressing. I did a little research and it looks like min. wage for restaurant servers is 4.60/hr. Think I can average 12-13/hr incl. tips at a casual un-fussy place? (obviously I'll be providing stellar service) Also, how hard is it to get a f/t job with no NY experience? I know a lot of people want that. This is a big part of why I want something like a cafe that's more relaxed. Can someone who's waited tables f/t in NY provide some insight?

I'm not moving for a while but I need to get some idea of how just how poor I'm gonna be, so I can plan accordingly. It'll either be beginning of Nov or beginning of Feb, as I don't want to mess with relocating in the middle of holiday season. But if I can swing it, even though I'll be poorer, I'll come sooner rather than later. Can't think of a better Christmas present than finally being out of this place and away from my family.

This post was unnecessarily long. Thank you and I apologize to anyone who read it all. Can't wait to get up there and be part of your community.

hey lauren, some things to know about waiting tables in NYC (i did it pretty consistently from 1996 to 2002 and i assume not much has changed). this might pertain more to restaurants than to cafes, but take from it what you can:

1. do not even count on an "hourly" wage to factor into your take home pay. whatever pay you receive as hourly wage will be taken out by taxes. think of your tips as your ONLY source of income.

2. if you have absolutely NO NYC experience, you'll have a harder time getting a job - but it's not impossible. i did it with the only experience at a health food cafe in albany. if you have any experience at all waiting tables you're ahead of the game.

3. rather than look through ads, i've found it best to just walk into places in neighborhoods you like and hand over your resume. most places are always looking, and that way they get to see your pretty face. (you're pretty, right? good! that helps.)

4. you might make as little as $300 one week (anything less, you should find another place) and $700 the next. rain and big sports games mean less customers. with time comes turnover which means better shifts for you and better pay. if you're making over $150 a dinner, that's pretty good. less than $100 a dinner kinda sucks. for lunch, $50 isn't too bad. most places want you to work between 4 and 6 shifts a week. (if they ask you to work 11 shifts a week, RUN.)

5. in the interview, tell them that nothing that will conflict with any schedule they offer you and act bright and chipper and willing to do anything. be willing to take crappy shifts at first. if they ask "what is your weakest quality?" say "i like to clean too much and i'm too helpful."

6. once you get the job, the most important things are to be fast, be organized, and don't get caught spitting in anything. oh! DON'T GET STRESSED OUT. just repeat to yourself: "it's only a meal. i won't be doing this forever. we will all die someday."

and don't really spit in anything.

good luck!

Thank you! A wealth of knowledge. Indeed.

I wasn't sure exactly how high taxes were in NY, so that helps enormously. I will have experience waiting tables, plus fast food in college and other somewhat relevant stuff. I have a decent list already of restaurants I know I like in NY, and figured I would, once I'm moving, get more suggestions from places like this board and then go around the city asking who's hiring. I'd have no problem lying about no conflicts, I am soulless, but it will be the truth, so that's easy. I plan to work as much as I have to, and then fit in as much improv as possible around that.

Again, thanks. I'll be back in a number of months seeing if anyone knows someone who has a friend with a room to sublet.......

My pal A passed this on to me today. StoryCorps is the cool project that records the stories of the people in booths at Grand Central and downtown NYC, and they need people for various positions, not just the one I'm linking below. Check it out, yo:
