Hey all,

Imagine there was a new improv/sketch theatre opening up in NYC and you could have your opinion heard and counted as to what you'd like have happen.

Well that place is The City and while we have shows going on eery week, we're still in the starting phase and I'd love to hear your opinions for what you'd like to see on stage, in the class room as well as just the overall experience of the place.

Much love,

Books,

The groups set the admission price and we do have a no drink minimum option at the club. So your idea is a very real possibility.

And don't forget that Improvisers and Sketch comedians from all theaters in NYC get into The City for free for any show at the club.

and while I was going to save this for its own special announcement thread, The City has just decided to carry P.B.R. in the can for $1.50 each for performers and anyone with The City I.D. card (coming soon.)

What other ideas do you guys have?

ok, so far you'd like:
$5 cover and no drink minimum - which is an option

Bad Jew Whipping - not sure if we can get the proper license for that.

Improv Jam - coming in August and hosted every other week by Chocolate Cake City and City Hall (I just realized they both have "City" in their name, this was actually not done on purpose.)

and Bunnies - again not sure if we can get the license.

Any other thoughts or ideas?

Awesome, awesome idea! Consider it done.

Now, what should our first discussion be about and who should we invite to be on the panel?

Brilliant! Looking forward to more excellent ideas!

Some ideas:

Form vs. Formlessness - How stringently should one hold to a form?

The goals of the improviser - What is it you're trying to do? How do you succeed at improv?

The function of the audience suggestion - As inspiration? As theme? As departure point? As return stop?

Rules - A discussion of the meaning of "The only rule is there are no rules."

Class improv vs. performance improv - A discussion on the perceived hypocrisy between what you learn in improv class and what you see onstage

Those are some ideas. As for panelists, it depends on the topic. I suppose improv teachers would be most appealing to me as guests, but also acclaimed performers, not to mention newbie performers. A diversity of people and/or a diversity of opinions may make for an interesting show.

It should have a moderator who is in control of the dialogue. Someone who is open-minded, inquisitive, and knowledgeable of improv in general (not just one strain of thought).

Some rough ideas.

All great ideas. I think we're going to set up something called "The City Council" where we'll discuss the general state of both The City improv/sketch theater specifically and the NY and even national improv/sketch scene as well.

I'll get a date out for the first city council soon, at that point I'll announce our first topic.

Ok,

For all those who have ever been involved in improv/sketch classes or performances and you thought "this could really be done better." now is the time to speak up.

You could help make The City a greater place for yourself and the rest of the improv/sketch community.
