Dirty South Improv
#1

DSI Comedy Theater seeks both professional and college improv submissions for the 7th annual Dirty South Improv Festival.

http://festival.dirtysouthimprov.com

February 6th - 11th, 2007

DSIF is the largest event of its kind outside of the UCB's Del Close Marathon. The 2007 festival will be held at 4 different venues in downtown Carrboro and Chapel Hill, North Carolina. All festival submissions will be reviewed for consideration on all stages.

Deadline For Submissions
All submissions must arrive at the Dirty South Improv Festival office no later than 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 15, 2006.

Mail Submissions To:
Zach Ward, Executive Producer
c/o Dirty South Improv Festival
PO Box 1330
Chapel Hill, NC 27514 (USA)

Submission Fee / Festival Fee
There is a non-refundable submission fee of $35 USD per entry. Submissions received without the required $35 submission fee will not be reviewed.

Make money orders and organizational checks payable to DSI Comedy Theater. Foreign artists must send an International Money Order in U.S. funds. Submission fees may also be paid by credit card through PayPal. The festival cannot accept cash or personal checks.

FESTIVAL REGISTRATION BALANCE: Upon acceptance each individual performer, director, stage manager will be required to pay a Festival Fee by December 15th. There is one Festival Fee per person for COLLEGE GROUPS and there are two different fees per person for PROFESSIONAL GROUPS for the 2007 festival (however each group will only be able to choose one fee category so we can easily manage participants, ie: your whole group pays one balance and receives the same festival package).

FESTIVAL FEE / PACKAGE #1 COLLEGE GROUP and You're in college!
= $65 per person ($80 after December 15th)

FESTIVAL FEE / PACKAGE #2 PROFESSIONAL GROUP and You want workshops!
= $65 per person ($85 after December 15th)

FESTIVAL FEE / PACKAGE #3 PROFESSIONAL GROUP and You prefer not to do workshops!
= $40 per person ($60 after December 15th)

Festival Eligibility
Any solo, duo or ensemble act or show created for live, improvised performance is eligible. Both college and professional Acts will be given equal consideration for performance and workshop opportunities. Acts or ensembles may submit more than one show to the festival. Acts from outside continental North America will be given extra consideration.

The Dirty South Improv Festival is not responsible for damage or loss of an entry. Submission of an entry and its materials acknowledges the right of DSI Comedy Theater and the Dirty South Impov Festival to use it for exhibition, publication and promotion.

Preparation of Submissions
For consideration, all submissions should contain the following materials:

  • A DVD, VHS tape or CD-ROM of your act or show (25-45 minutes).

  • A complete press package for your act or show, including any previous press clippings and recordings of radio/television interviews or appearances. This should include:
    • At least one colour photo of your act or ensemble cast.
    • Black and white photos of your act or ensemble cast.
    • A two- to three-paragraph description of your show.
    • A two- to three-paragraph description of yourself, team or ensemble.
    • Primary and secondary contact information for your act or ensemble, including phone, cell phone, fax, email, website, etc. The more contact info you can provide, the better.
    • A complete list of names, email addresses and phone numbers for all cast and crew members in your act or show, including directors, producers and stage managers.
    • A detailed list (bullet points) of your act or ensemble's technical requirements. Please include your act's preference for lighting cues, sound cues and musical accompaniment and whether you like to have your own technical director present.
    • Please submit the above in paper format, AND send a CD/DVD including all of the materials listed above. High resolution images (300 dpi) of all photos should be included on this disc so that we can easily transfer information.
SUBMISSION TIP: The Dirty South Improv Festival often uses submitted photos of accepted acts on its promotional materials (posters, postcards, website, tickets, etc.). The better your photo, the better your chances of your act or ensemble landing on our publicity material.

Preparation of Packages
Address packages to Dirty South Improv Festival.

Mail Submissions To:
Zach Ward, Executive Producer
c/o Dirty South Improv Festival
PO Box 1330
Chapel Hill, NC 27514 (USA)

I have a question about the "Festival Fee" that's mentioned here. Do I understand this correctly, after groups are selected to perform (and they pay a standard submission fee), then each member of these selected groups has to pay a Festival fee to fully be able to perform? Is this Festival fee charged to performers who do not plan to take any workshops during the fest? thanks

Thank you, IndianWinter.
Some have emailed so I will offer a detailed response.

The mission of the Dirty South Improv Festival is to educate and showcase improvisation. To that end, we do have a small registration fee that ALL participants (performers AND students) must pay to subsidize the benefits that you receive during the week of the event. 2007 will be the first year that "professional" (read: non-college) groups may elect to pay a reduced fee if they choose to not take Saturday workshops.

FESTIVAL FEE / PACKAGE #1 COLLEGE GROUP and You're in college!
= $65 per person ($85 after December 15th)

FESTIVAL FEE / PACKAGE #2 PROFESSIONAL GROUP and You want workshops!
= $65 per person ($85 after December 15th)

FESTIVAL FEE / PACKAGE #3 PROFESSIONAL GROUP and You prefer not to do workshops!
= $40 per person ($60 after December 15th)

If you are selected to perform (and you are a professional group that would prefer not to take workshops) then you must submit $40 per person by December 15th to confirm your performance slot. After December 15th the fee goes up to $60 per person and your performance slot may not be guaranteed.

DSIF 2007 Benefits, included with package #1, #2 and #3
- Festival Tshirt
- $5 tickets to premium shows
- FREE admission to all other shows
- FREE admission to kickass private parties, Thursday-Saturday
- FREE admission to improv panel discussion, Friday

DSIF 2007 Workshops, included with package #1 and #2
- Saturday 12-2pm
- Saturday 230-430pm

DSIF New for 2007
- Satellite Radio Coverage
- DSI CageMatch Invitational

ETC Benefits
- The Reckoning was given a performance opportunity opening for the legendary Georgia Pacific in the 2005 Chicago Improv Festival after their performance of Harold @ DSIF 5 was seen by Executive Producer Jonathan Pitts.
- Jimmie "JJ" Walker was a surprise guest during the 6th annual festival, performing a FREE show on Thursday at 11pm.
- There are more stories out there.

DSIF has become an annual convergence of the Who's Who of improv comedy with Artistic Directors and Festival Producers from across North America descending on North Carolina, and Dirty South does everything it can to facilitate professional relationships during the event, a festival dedicated to the advancement of improv as an artform by respecting and connecting the current artists, the future foot soldiers of the work and the audience that keeps us on stage.

Submission Deadline: November 15th

A comprehensive list of Festival Alum will be posted shortly.
And you can see that people keep coming back.

6 YEARS OF DIRTY SOUTH
http://festival.dirtysouthimprov.com

DSIF grown a considerable amount since we hosted less than 30 people and produced 2 shows in 2001. We welcomed over 500 professional and college improvisers into our community and DSIF produced 22 shows for 2006, featuring some of the most notable theaters and improv instructors in the country. Dirty South has been working hard to help the 7th annual Dirty South Improv Festival surpass all expectations (and they are high!). But thank you to everyone who has made the festival possible since we started.

DIRTY SOUTH DEADLINE 6PM TODAY (that's when the Post Office closes its doors).

Tonight we will be cataloging (Sp?) all the submissions and beginning the review process. Acts/ensembles can expect to hear back from DSIF staff by 5pm on Friday.

If you have sent your submission and feel like we might not receive it until tomorrow or Friday for some reason that was somehow beyond your control and really was a result of some perfect storm at the FedEx (FYI - FedEx will not ship to a PO Box) or it was your fault and so you team should not suffer... Please email festival@dirtysouthimprov.com with all the details; We will start the review while we eagerly await the arrival of your video.

--

How do we confirm our performance slot?

Upon your acceptance to DSIF 2007 your Act/ensemble will have until 6pm December 15th to pay the balance of the festival registration fee (either $40 per person or $65 per person, depending on package). At that point you will be scheduled for a specific performance slot during the festival.

If you are accepted and you are unable to pay the balance on or before 6pm December 15th the fees will increase (either $60 per person or $85 per person, depending on package) and your performance slot cannot be guaranteed.

What if we are not given a performance slot?

If you are still interested in rocking DSIF 2007 as a participant (which we have at least 7 or 8 groups do every year) you can confirm by paying the balance on or before 6pm December 15th ($65 per person, because the workshops are worth the trip). If you do this your Act/ensemble will automatically be placed on a waitlist for performance should any Acts pull out. After December 15th, non-performing festival participant availability will be limited and will cost $85 per person.

Questions:

If you get in and then have to pay "the balance of the festival registration fee" is that less the submission fee? What I mean is... is the submission fee applied to the registration fee? Is that why you say balance?

And... for anyone who's interested in going to the festival just to see shows and take workshops... that'll be $85 and more information coming after Dec. 15th?

Answers:

For various administrative reasons the "submission fee" is separate from the "registration fee". It will not be applied to the balance. FYI - The 2007 submission fee was reduced to $35 from the $50 that had been charged in previous years. We use festival balance as in "balance due" upon acceptance (submissions will not be reviewed if the submission fee has not been included). NOTE: If two Acts/ensembles have been accepted and they have a performer in common, only one balance will reflect the fee for that common performer but BOTH performance confirmations will be dependent on the reciept of payment from BOTH Acts.

If you're interested in simply seeing shows and taking workshops you can register as soon as NOW with an email to festival@dirtysouthimprov.com (include the information required below*). Payments of $65 will be accepted until December 15th and payments of $85 will be accepted after December (with limited availability).

The deadline to confirm space with payment is 6PM today.

At that time performance spaces will open up to the waitlist (spaces being given to confirmed waitlisted groups first) and the price will go up $20 per person for all package types.
