So the Republicans swept all the races, the United Nations voted to go after Iraq and we all went back to our dull day to day affairs. I often wonder just how much the TV and news actually affect our rational thinking.
Some where focus groups must have told the TV news guys that we wanted 24 hour weather! That and the most horrific scenes of car crashes and burning buildings. Most local stations now give weather every other minute like an impending disaster was moving right down my street! I live in a pretty temperate climate, I know it’s not going to snow, yet my weather girl like to lead me to believe that if I don’t listen to her every word…….. I’ll be trapped in my house with no milk or bread for days!
News is cheap, I understand that. It’s much cheaper to send a guy out to stand on a highway overpass in the rain than it is to buy a rerun of the Jeffersons! My problem with it is there are only about six news stories in 90 minutes of local news. They just keep repeating and rehashing the same six stories over and over and over. They show thm from the “chopper”, they have “team coverage” and they have an “exclusive”. By the way, how do all the channels have the same exclusive?
This just in….. Breaking news…… today’s top story….. First at five….. Make it stop! I just want some news, some weather and some sports, is that asking too much? News has become entertainment. OJ saw to that. People love to see guys in wife beater tee shirts being arrested in a drunkin stupor. We love to see people at their worst. It’s entertainment! Carnival sides show right in my living room nightly. There for all the kiddies to see.
Just give me back my 30 minutes of real local news and if I need more, well we have 24 hour networks for that. Speaking of which, if your as old as I am and can remember when there were only 3 networks, did you ever think there would be so many dumb ass channels?
24 hours of any topic you can imagine! 60 channels of HBO, news, sports, weather, women’s channels, men’s channels, kid’s channels, pet channels….. hell Oprah even has her own channel! Where the hell is my channel??? I need air time myself to show more local news and weather!!!
