Has anyone here auditioned for SNL or know someone who has? Anyone submit a writing packet? If so or even if not so, do you happen to know 1) How one gets an audition, or who to send said writing packet to?

Ben Stiller gave a video of a short he wrote to Jon Lovitz in the NBC elevator and told him to show it to Lorn. Thats how he got an audition.

Yes, introducing yourself using your IRC username gives you bonus points.

So there's a massive waiting list, eh? Do they have auditions all year round, or only during the summer...etc...

My post wasn't really a dig on your name, but a dig on the fact that you started a "Saturday Night Live Sucks" thread and immediately followed it with a "How Do I Get On Saturday Night Live" thread.

Laserbattle: I forget who, but I read that someone got an audition one time just by waiting outside Rockefeller Center and running up to Lorne Michaels really fast and making him take an audition tape. Michaels was so impressed with his get-up-and-go that while he hired him as a writer.

It was actually Eric Appel dressed as George Washington Carver.
Lorne then offered him a spot in the show (I think this was for the 2002 season) But Appel changed his mind and turned it down.
He had a party to go to on the season premiere that year and he had already RSVPed.

That Appel is a man of his word!

It was the 2003 season and Eric changed his name to Steve and Lorne couldn't find "Eric Appel" on the IRC to hire him!

Get your facts straight.

This always comes up in my sketch classes. I'll try and give an answer as best as I know it and there will be nothing snarky to it:

You're asked to audition. You're asked to submit as a writer. In the meantime, write, perform, do good work -- UCB, Groundlings, The Second City, stand-up, wherever you are, whatever you do. The rest will one day take care of itself. There are no shortcuts or any kind of magic formula.

It's good to have dreams. It's good to try and turn your dreams into goals. SNL is a big gig. Just stay focused on your work and try and love every minute of the process.

I've heard it's a good idea to kidnap Lorne Michaels and keep him in a cage in your basement? Jake? What do you think? Yay or nay?

Well my comment was suppose to be a "playing along with your post" comment. But with all this damn new technology and emoticons only expressing so much, it probably came across as "I was insulted by your post." Which I wasn't. In retrospect I should've put [chuckling through out, playfully nudging you with elbow] after saying "using your IRC username gives you bonus points etc..".

But as for the threads, look, we can all complain about SNL until our fingers fall off, but we'll still love it. I started that thread but I watch it every week. It's a hot topic, this is a board where people like typing things, so why not?

So with that in mind, this thread doesn't seem as contradictory.

The key being that typing things is fun!

P.S. The same night I made the other thread, I bought SNL Trivial Pursuit...only to play alone. See SNL doesn't suck, SNL is the best! But complaining about it is almost as entertaining. It's my first post to break 1,000 views don't ruin it for me! :) :bleagh:

Jake makes a whole lot of sense, great answer. Now I really need to get off my ass and see his show at the UCB. I've been too busy working for the man. But no longer!!!
