shrinking your avatar

when I tried to post my avatar it told me it was too big / had too many pixels.

i opened the picture in the paint program on windows XP and when I tried to shrink it to the 65x65 pixel format required by this site, it didn't recenter the picture. basically it shrunk it down to the upper left hand corner of the picture that equaled the 65x65 pixel size

any ideas on how you maybe first recenter the picture, then shrink it?

thanks a lot,
fred

Paint is sorta clumsy but you can use the image menu stretch/skew item to make the picture some % of the original. If it is 650 x 650 then 10% (you should be so lucky, but that is what calculator is for). also, i think with stretch/skew you can only do either horizontal shrink or vertical shrink in one step then do the other (between the two steps the picture looks totally screwed)

If you need to square up the original you can use the select function (little dotted line box shaped button on the side ) to box the area you want then copy and bring up a new area and paste the selected part of the picture in.

Wash it in hot water?

The way I do it with Paint is trial and error. I crop the right side by setting the width & height to some number that puts the border where I want on the right. I then rotate it 180 degrees and do it again. I just keep going back and forth until I get it to 65x65 with the correct part of the image showing. The BETTER option is to use a real image editing program, like Photoshop. But I don't have that installed on my machine.

Hmmm....that's too easy. I'll stick with my ugly hack! This shows how little I play with images.

Hey, the ultimate measure of an avitar is do people walk up to you on Harold nite and say, "Are you, urfman, wow I liked that ... you ...".

Anyway, welcome to the club!

And say "Hi" at the ucb next time.
