Sewing machine wanted

What's a good sewing machine? I know nothing about them so I hesitate to go out and buy one, since I don't know what's crap and what's awesome.

So I'm asking you sewing IRCers out there: Any recommendations? What's good, what's not, what's a good deal, what's easy to use for a beginner. I haven't really used a sewing machine since home economics in high school.

Thanks, smarty-pantses.

Erin

PS-This machine is for totally simple straight-stitch quiltmaking. I don't need anything fancy right now.

the bottom of the line singer runs about $130-150 and is very servicable. if you are only doing basic stitching, this is a great starter machine. it's the machine that i use and i've never had a major problem with it.

Boo yourself. This thread is a thing of beauty. I like it! If it were a scene, I'd clap extra hard. Good cooperation.

I remember asking you to sew me a Patington Bear last year and I have yet to receive it. I demand justice.

If I can get my hands on a good sewing machine for under $200, I will complete Paddington. He's almost done but there are slight alterations to be made. You don't want a bear with only eight toes, do you????

Anyway Singer machines are sold at Walmart but there is no Walmart in the city. I've been look all day, BRANDON. The internet is not as useful as people make it out to be. I'm just going to come to your house and use your wife's machine.
