PUNCH! Sketch Comedy’s First Show Ever In Rochester…No Foolin’!
A Virginia comedy act brings its funny, edgy format to Rochester on April Fools Day.
A dance off between Satan and Jesus over the soul of a female convict on death row; a self-help group for people who can’t come up with witty comebacks; the tortoise and the hare taking their competitive rivalry to college; a kid who’s "chore" is to exterminate the undead living in his basement; what happens when a principal mistakenly hires a porn director to shoot a science safety video: these are just a sampling of the offbeat premises played out on stage by PUNCH! Sketch Comedy.
PUNCH! Sketch Comedy, an ensemble group based in Richmond, will debut their bizarre blending of sketch comedy at Johnny’s Irish Pub on Saturday, April 1st, at 8PM and 10PM. PUNCH! was recently a main stage performer at the 2006 Miami Improv Festival.
The four actors who make-up the ensemble create some of their material through a process called "re-improvisation" where they improv a scene over and over, each time cutting and changing elements within the previous scene until they boil it down to a cohesive sketch.
To help drive this process, PUNCH! Sketch Comedy also features a number of improv sets in their show. One of these sets is known as "The Civil War". This piece, conceptualized by Rochester native, George Herring, is based on the premise that improv comedy was created on the battlefields of the civil war in an attempt to lift up troop morale. So the guys perform in civil war garb and try their best to, as Herring says, "filter all the audience input through the criteria that it must make sense to people who lived during the time of the civil war".
Another improv set that is a fan favorite is the "Love Rollercoaster". A take-off on "The Dating Game", the Love Rollercoaster brings an unwitting "bachelorette" up from the audience. Then she is introduced to the most disturbing rogue’s gallery of eligible bachelors this side of a mental institution.
