Scott Muni, a veteran radio DJ and personality died last night. His rock and roll legend goes back to the 50s, he's the guy who actually replaced Alan Freed at WAKR in Akron Ohio. He was one of the original "Good Guys" of WMCA in NYC. His legend grew when he moved to WABC in 1960. He was the guy in NYC who championed the Beatles and he became great friends with them. In 1967 he moved to WNEW where he helped that station create a whole new format of rock and roll radio.

There's more about him at q104.3's website.

So long professor. I'll be thinking of you at noon everyday, when I would religiously tune in for the Beatle's Block and all the sets of songs that you put together.

His show is on in 10 minutes. I'm curious what they'll do.

He prerecorded his shows, so they could play it out. . .we'll see!

Scottso!

12 noon. The professor is in.
The show opened with a story from Dan Ingram, of WCBS-FM fame. He worked with Scottso back at WABC and Ingram might have been one of the "Good-Guys" at MCA too. Dan told the story of Scottso getting kicked in the throat by a goat, which is how he got that crazy gravelly voice of his. Ingram sounded a bit choked up, but as always, upbeat and professional.
- In My Life The Beatles
- All You Need Is Love The Beatles

A clip from an interview with John the week that Rock & Roll was being released. "God bless you John Lennon, and God Bless Yoko." "Thanks Scott. Yeah, Me and Yoko back together. We tried to live apart and it just wasn't working out." "Come back and see us again, will you John?" "You bet Scottso. WNEW has always been very kind to me."
- Stand By Me John Lennon

clip from interview with Elton John. "Yes, John and I were working on rewriting Imagine. 'Imagine six apartments. . .' It's funny how we're all invested and holding real estate when 10 years ago we'd have given it all away." They talked about John's last public appearance at Elton's concert at Madison Square Garden. Elton: "I'd like to see Sean again."
- Just Like Starting Over John and Yoko Lennon

John reads a commercial announcement for Corvettes department stores.

- Break

Coming back they played the infamous Dog Day Afternoon tape. Scottso was the DJ that the bank robbers called on that crazy day. If you've seen the Pacino/Cazale movie you know what this is all about. It's a tough call to hear, this guy was an absolutely tortured soul and Muni did his best to help him out. Stuck Inside A Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again was playing in the background as Muni talked to the robbers.
- Knocking On Heaven's Door Bob Dylan
- Times They Are A Changin' Bob Dylan

clip from the blackout of 77 or 76 or whenever that huge blackout was. Muni with a record player and a microphone at the back up studios down at the transformer station. Great line from scottso, "Someone, somewhere, is writing a song about this event, right now."
- American Pie Don McLean

Old WABC promo of DJ line up (including Ingram, Cousin Brucie and Muni)

- break

clip from interview with The Who. Scottso catches up with Keith Moon whom he hasn't seen in quite a while. Clears up rumors, Moon isn't on deathbed and isn't married. Muni talks about the serious side of Keith Moon, Moon laughs it off. Moon died about a month after this interview.
- The Song Is Over The Who

- Stuck In A Moment (acoustic) U2

clip of Muni calling a contest winner. 1964 or so. Winner is 16 year old girl. "So you're old enough to know better." She gets to see the Beatles and meet them backstage. She's freaking out!

- Long And Winding Road The Beatles.

Great production job. Zach Martin probably put the show together. He'd been working with Scottso for a long time as his producer. Very tasteful and not too emotional and focused on three of the artists that Muni certainly loved best, Beatles, Who, and Dylan.
