Rental cars?

Anyone know any reasonable alternatives to the major rental car companies (and Zipcar) in NYC? I don't want anything shady, just cheaper.

Or is it just better to take a train outside the city and rent from there?

Slightly shady, but not really. Several locations in Brooklyn. They used to be Dollar Rent a Car if that makes it feel less shady.

CC Rentals, though they may look very shady are 100% on the level and rent more stuff that anyone in the city. I know they have the best price on cube-trucks and cargo vans, but no clue on normal cars. But worth a try.

A friend of mine visiting me in L.A. from San Francisco used Priceline.com.

He did a search for $11 a day just on a whim, and got one! Then he was offered an upgrade to a Nissan ZX for $10. So maybe you could try that way?

I haven't tried this, but a friend of mine signed up as a member for all of the big car rental companies. No cost, but probably puts you on spam lists. When he was going on vacation recently his girlfriend looked at cars and then he did. His price ended up being 1/5th of hers from the same company.
