2. IR receiver ("B") for remote control. This is in the room with you and the remote control, not the room with the thing you want to control remotely.
3. IR "gun" ("C") in the room you're not in, pointed at the IR receiver of the thing you want to control.
You zap the local receiver ("B") with the remote control ("A") and it ("B") tells the unit in the other room ("C") (via radio frequency or something) what to tell the thing you're controlling.
Actually I just thought of a better solution -- you build the radio transmitter INTO the remote control ("A").
