Reasons for Limits?

#1
I was just wondering why the 10000 char post limit, 1000 char PM limit, and 40 pm inbox limits exist, is it to conserve HD space? Doesn't really make sense if it's for bandwidth reasons.

Oh, and please don't take this as antagonistic, I love this place, and you have every right not to answer and tell me to screw off.

Plus, Mullaney is one of the best admins I've seen on a big board like this. =) </kissass>

And as the database gets bigger, performance suffers? I mean, relatively, 258 megs isn't too big, I'm sure the members of the IRC could find a 20gig HD or something if it meant that the limits would be gone. =)

Yes, it can suffer a bit, for searches and such. Actually if we are talking about website databases, that is quite huge.

I can't just buy a new HD and install it. It doesn't really work like that, since were talking about a machine that I don't have access to. I have a little less than 1 gig storage allocated by my ISP. I do not store the site on a computer I have at home.

I'm with a hosting company...It's a HUGE amount of space for a website!!! Less limits would make it skyrocket!

It also makes moving it a problem should the need arise and the relative merit of having much more than that. I think the limits are actually pretty reasonable and well thought out.

Remember, we get this for free.

Kevin's doin' a good job with a great service for a better price!
