Random Retail Tip of the Day

Ah, Tara...I swear...finding a man in this city seems easier than finding a pleasing pair of shoes.

I can't buy shoes over the internet...I wear anything from an 8 to a 9, depending on the shoe.

I'm not a fan of Saks...don't know why...I've never been. I'd rather go to the designer's storeand buy the shoe directly from them...they usually have more sizes/widths/colors.

I agree that sometimes there's cute stuff on sale at OTP, but you usually have to wait till the end of the season. I want cute shoes NOW. I want real leather. With a stiletto that curves slightly (none of this Luchiny straight stiletto bullshit...that crap snaps after 5 blocks). Or a cute slender kitten heel. None of this thick heel baloney. (Not that I don't love platforms, of course, but I usually only wear them in summer).

BTW...here's a lovely little retail tip...don't be afraid of Lord & Taylor. They actually have some cute stuff...and they ALWAYS have a sale. If you sign up for their mailing list, you can get 15% to 30% off stuff every week...and, sometimes, if you sign up for a Lord & Taylor card, you'll get another 10-15% on top of that.

For you artsy types...New Tip!

Sam Flax, high-end purveyor of art and office supplies, is relocating to Third Avenue. Thus, its store on 55th and Park Avenue is having a major closeout.

Goodies to be at at 50% off and greater are top-quality:
  • photo albums and frames including those expensive poster-sized ones
  • scrapbooks
  • journals
  • portfolios
  • cute "artsy craftsy" kids toys, games, office/desk toys
  • some office furniture
  • some (limited) art supplies - sketch books, pads

Great stuff, people! I did a bit of damage there today. Get some holiday shopping done early! Still a decent selection but pickings are getting slimmer.

You know, this retail talk gave me an idea for a sticky in the NYC forum: costumes and stage supplies. There have to be better choices for, say, a last minute leprechaun hat, than spending a fortune at Abracadabra or whatever.

I've started a journal which will include some of these things, hopefully soon!

But yeah, or a prop/costume store and prop/costume exchange (ie, who's got a Weird Al wig) would be a cool idea too

Zappos.com has been my friend for a long time.

I got a pair of suede saucony for 15 bucks on there. (as well as many other cheap purchase, this was just my recent find)

I always just click on the 'sale' button and see whats up.

their customer service is wonderful. They sent me the wrong shoes (23 dollar kangaroos) - so for my inconvenience they gave me a 20 dollar coupon!!! - so i returned the shoes - got my credit, now i eagerly await to find my next purchase!!
and use my 20 bucks!

Also in regards to Shoes -

Go to DSW - 14th street - union square

There is also one in queens (the one i go to)

AMAZING prices, and AMAZING brands.

sign up for their shoppers card - every 250 you spend you get a 25 dollar gift card - Plus they constantly send you coupons in the mail - birthday dollars etc.
I have little troulbe finding 20 dollar sneaks at DSW

I heart DSW and Zappos.com -

Say I'm looking to outfit someone like a school boy - shorts, suit jacket w/ crest, propeller beanie, tie and shoes.

It's easy enough to do but what ideas do ya'll have for finding shorts and a jacket in the dead of winter? And all on the cheap?

Also, where can I get my paws on an iron on "crest"?

GDW WHERE ARE YOU??????

Call me, woman!

First off I may own a propellor beanie. Don't ask. If not, Halloween Adventure it is.

Second of all, Conways on 42nd street may still have (a) pleated mens shorts on the clearance rack waaaay in the back (b) shirts with stiched on logo "crests" (c) blazers with crests (d) striped "old school" ties packaged with mens shirts.

Third, if the person in question is small enough, some stores carry school uniform gear (French Toast is the brand I believe). I do not recall the stores that carry this line but you can look it up; also more high schools requrie uniforms and kids are getting bigger every day, so there is hope!
