I should have posted this here last week, but the charity aspect was put into affect (at my 8-year-old's insistence) just over the last few days and I don't normally plug shows to other improvisors.

Hurricane Benefit for two weekends

The Raleigh Village Idiots return to the stage September 2nd, 3rd, 9th, and 10th in their 54th revue; featuring the return of their unedited long-form bonus set!

Proceeds from Idiot shows normally go to purchase Twinkies for the group, but all proceeds this month will go to The American Red Cross for disaster relief to aid the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Our (approximately) 90 minute 8PM show is family-friendly, as is fitting for our teaching theatre. However, give us about 10 minutes to rest, and then adults are welcome to stay for a bonus set. We will come back with 20-30 minutes of long-form comedy, unedited for content. (This bonus set may not be appropriate for the whole family due to topics that may arise in our exploration of the evening's theme.)

All shows are at the North Raleigh Arts and Creative Theatre. For directions, info, or reservations call 919-866-0228 or visit www.nract.org. Shows start at 8:00 and cost only $5 to get in. Additional donations made out directly to the American Red Cross will be accepted (and Red Cross will send receipts for tax purposes). Cookies provided by Food Lion as a thank you for your donation.

We'll also have a jar for the American Red Cross at our 24-hour charity event this weekend, so if you see improv this weekend, you're likely to be sending some money to a good cause.

I'm really glad the Idiots got mobilized so quickly for this. That rocks.

Give Mikey some tongue for me.

We didn't have to mobilize much, they're our regularly scheduled shows. Your mother made all the calls to coordinate with the Red Cross and get cookies from Food Lion.

And whose idea was this? Jacob. My 8-year-old. He was watching flood news with Madhavi and turned to her and said, "What can we do to help." She said we could send money and he asked what else we could do. She said we could sell cookies at the next show and that excited him. In discussing it with Chris (she's the manager of the theater these days, btw) it grew into turning the shows into a benefit and having an "additional donations" table with free cookies to say thanks.

I will tongue Mikey tonight at rehearsal. And maybe even reincarnate the angry nipple.

Storm aid is the theme

By MELISSA DRAPER, Correspondent

New Orleans needs our help, and North Raleigh has set to helping. It seems kindness is contagious.
Relief efforts are popping up all over our area. One of the most impressive I've seen is "Trails of Kindness," created by a neighborhood in the Durant Trails subdivision. Residents there held a Labor Day get-together and raised more than $2,300 that will help victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Durant Trails is challenging others to follow its lead and to document their successes at the group's Web site, www .trailsofkindness.com.

Three other neighborhoods have already joined the "trail" and are planning their events.

Additional local ways to get involved include:

* Tonight and Saturday night's improv shows at the North Raleigh Arts & Creative Theatre on Lead Mine Road. Proceeds will go to hurricane relief. Visit www.idiots.net for details.

* Red's Beach Music on Craftsman Drive is holding a fund-raiser tonight. The Embers will perform, and a minimum $10 donation is required.

* On Sunday, Gianni and Gaitano's on New Falls of the Neuse Road will have free pizza from noon to 5 p.m. and free wine tasting from 5 to 9 p.m. Ten percent of the proceeds from regular food orders will be donated to hurricane relief.
