I've alway thought of the humorist PJ O'Rourke a travel writer, although his beat was war zones. See : Holidays in Hell.

I recently skimmed a book by Bill Geist : Discovering the Peculiar Charms of Small-Town America.

Doesn't Chris Gethard qualify as a travel writer since he wrote the book Weird New Jersey?

Actually, he compiled the BOOK Weird NY for the MAGAZINE Weird NJ (which he wrote for as well).

Sincerely,

Rory Stewart

He has two books. "The Prince of the Marshes" (about his time ruling a province of Iraq about the war) and "The Places Between" (about him pleasure backpacking through Afragastand? during the start of that war). But don't worry this isn't some right-wing nut, but a smart scotish oxford gradute who joined M-4 to help shape it from inside, with a focus on arab culture.

Both books are amazing tools to understanding the current wars from the street up. I found him when the Times Book Review said "Places Between" was "a masterpiece. The best piece of travel writing since Stienback."

Read him, and then wish you could vote for Rory for President of the world.
