Question about proper forums (done to death, I know)

I'm serious, though. And no, for the love of all that's holy, I am NOT bitter. Confused, maybe. Trying to stay off all the turf I'm not supposed to tread on, and fumbling with what's left...well, that can be confusing.

I've mentioned in previous posts in the off topic forum that I have a desire to learn more about what it is that improvisers actually *do*. Granted, there's talk going on all around, but when you haven't seen these people in action, it's mighty hard to mentally picture. The information is as complete as they need it to be, but it falls short of explaining it to me.

Is there a place anywhere on this site where it would be safe and okay to ask really dumb and lame-assed questions (because they'd be coming from a completely uninformed newbie - not to the site, but to the practice itself) and find that anyone was willing to answer in such a way that that answer could hopefully truly be understood?

That was one helluva long sentence, sorry.

Please don't think I'm being snippish or trying to start another 'war'. I promise you that I am not. It's just that I feel like it would be unwelcome in the Improv forum - I obviously don't belong there, I cannot contribute, only ask questions...and I can't see any patience level for these kinds of questions in the off topic forum. Basically I'm thinking folks would find completely uninformed questions beneath them, and a huge pain in the ass.

Is there anyone with the time, patience, and willingness to even volunteer to answer questions that would probably bore them to tears? If not, then I think all hope for me is lost. I've been reading posts for seven months, and I'm no closer to a clear mental picture than I was in the beginning.

I am saddened by my inability to 'see' what everyone else sees, and I'm ready to give up.

I think that the Improvisation forum should work. I would put questions there. Maybe start a thread with a simple question and add questions as your questions get answered. I think you are more likely to get a more legitimate response there then in the "off-topic" forum.

Also, keep in mind that some questions are much easier to answer than others. Defining a term that we all use might be a simple question to answer ("What is a pimp?"). I would be delighted to try to explain what we are talking about.

Lastly, there is a heavy "you gotta be there" factor involved. I think most of us at one point or another saw our first great long-form improv show and it blew our mind. It can be really hard to imagine until you see it.

This I understand completely - in fact, it has a lot to do with why I haven't been able to pick up what I want to understand just from reading what's already posted. Everyone has a visual in their mind of what's being discussed - I'm missing that visual. And tone of voice. And...everything.

It's frustrating. I'm normally able to get a clear mental picture of things from reading. It hasn't been working, this time, and I haven't wanted to irritate anyone further than they've already been by asking too many 'you gotta be there' questions.

Okay, so if you're reasonably sure I won't get 'screamed' right out of the Improv forum, the next time I'm reading and want to post a question, I'll dip my toe in the pool and do exactly that.

Thanks.

I'll pray for your toe.
Seamonkey, not only is my toe fine and in fact quite happy, the rest of my foot and leg have joined it in the pool. Have a look for yourself, you'll find out that the waters aren't shark-infested, as you might think. There's some friendly, intelligent, dolphin-types in here.

I highly recommend reading the entire thread before adding anything to it.

My toe is alive and well.

Love,
