Playing With Reality is an interactive performance company. Utilizing long-form improvisation techniques, we invite an audience member (typically a non-actor) onstage to co-create a story. Not necessarily funny, and not necessarily dramatic, the purpose of the work is to empower individuals to make choices and play with their heart out.
We’re the resident company at Canal Park Playhouse (508 Canal St, btwn Greenwich & Washington Sts):
Properties of Play
2nd & 4th Monday each month (Feb 28, Mar 14, Mar 28, Apr 11, etc)
7:30-9pm (6:30pm Call Time)
Standard rehearsals take place at the playhouse on the Mondays we don’t perform, 7:15-10:15pm.
The job is pretty simple – lights up lights down, playing house music pre- and post-show, sweeping the stage – but there’s an added element of storytelling. The SM is the one to find the ending of the story. It requires a sense of narrative and a good ear to find the precise moment a story should end. Too soon and it feels unresolved; too late and it weakens the narrative. It’s a challenge that is very rewarding and recognized by the company members and the audience.
This is currently unpaid, a deal breaker for many. However, Playing With Reality is working towards other projects that will provide compensation.
Interested applicants should submit a cover letter listing general availability and any relevant experience, along with a current resumé, to InteractivePerformance@gmail.com.
