Planning stages - Dublin Improv

As inspired by Deez and enthusiastically received by the IRC, this thread is to inform and gather information for a possible Improv festival in Ireland, for late spring in 2007.

Interested groups should forward their information and interest to me at Festival AT michelledobrawsky DOT com for the time being. Include at this point whether you would like to perform, conduct/attend workshops, and have any leads on press, venues or housing. Also, if you don't have such, think about acquiring a passport and preparing a press kit. Anyone who wishes to volunteer services should drop me a line as well including their particular skill they'd like to contribute.

Web site and form to folllow.

Thanks IRC!

What are your needs for rehearsal space, if any?

Those who've expressed interest, can you tell me what your Dublin-side logistic needs are. A brandy glass filled with brown M&Ms? ;)

Will an ad-hoc troupe be forming for the purposes of this gig?

- Don't worry about the troupe formation, as those details will fall into place according to the group. Each troupe should be assembled before applying and likely they'll be experienced enough improvisors.

- Don't worry about rehearsal space, as each group should just need to warm up/tech through at the space before the performance.

- Let's worry about logistics once the venue and roster are in place, but you should be scouting out those logistics now (rather than on a group by group basis)

- We should have thiese discussions off-thread because I can more easiliy answer the questions :)

(Folks correct me if I'm wrong regarding logistics and all.)

Logistics are usually pretty minimal, but a place to warm up before the show and for some a tech rehearsal is good.

A friend of mine lives in Dublin and is an experienced (but currently inactive) improviser. Would it be a good idea to get in touch with her and see if there's local interest?

When travelling, especially internationally, I would think that any cost reducing/profit sharing would be key. This would include:

Getting to and from the airport
Finding a place to stay
Group rate airfare

In addition, parties/social gatherings will be key. A planned Guinness tour, anyone?

Tech rehearsals are necessary but all you need is a venue for that. Warming up... a green room.

Sounds like a good idea to me. If we can get in touch & she knows other local improvers, that will be good.

Getting from the airport can be tricky, although not at all worse than JFK to Manhattan. A private bus can probably be arranged.

You *might* save serious money by flying to London, and thence to Dublin. That makes for more potential for slip-ups, though.

Aer Lingus is currently fighting a hostile takeover from its enemy/competitor airline, so I don't know what that means to what group rates it may offer.

Will update tonight when I've spoken to (what I think is) the local Improv venue's people. I don't recall it having any green room, so I'll see what Theatres are available.

Who's has experience of and is interested in teaching a Workshop?

I have connections at the Temple Bar Music Center in central Dublin, and the few relative bars where my friends perform- mainly music venues. I can ask my friends what their booking deets are and inquire alternate venues. A few of these places have greenroom backstage areas- i know the Music cneter definitely does- but they're like a massive Rock venue- sometimes they host parties there.

My friends are all rocker people and are on tour at the moment so it maybe a month or so time before i get any real info. I may be going to Ireland sooner than late Spring for personal reasons.

Anyway- I'll stay in touch with Michelle and post any info as I get it.

Holy yay.

I flew to London for like $139 each way and took Aer Lingus to Dublin for about $39. There's also Easy Jet and Ryan Air.

So far I've gotten a couple of responses on my webmail to the Festival. People if your groups are interested Email me to this address so I can start tracking the groups.

Nice cleavage!

Support from the local community is essential. Make sure that you involve as many theaters and troupes as possible to make them feel vested in the success of this event.

Thanks, man. Just trying to keep interest here and abroad.

Ahem.

So far 3 local (US) and 1 Dublin group have signed in!

Spoke to the venue (Ha'penny Inn, Dublin 2) and the guy who books the Comedy acts upstairs. Improv is definitely part of what they do and he definitely sounds intrigued. I said I'd talk to him properly tomorrow.

No green room at the Ha'penny, alack.

But I passed the Music Centre tonight and I was thinking along the same lines as you, Rosie. It's a good venue. There are a lot of such in this city.

Assuming some of you will wanna teach workshops, I'm going to look into the work permits situation. That's *look into*, not "make bookings". If you were to specify that you're teaching the North American style of Improv, that oughtta cover you nicely, if I understand the rules.

If I thought "gwynanney" were happening, I'd be SO THERE!
(though Mullyn sounds more Celtic)
I'd even teach a workshop.

But otherwise I am groupless. I'm too poor to consider coming along JUST for shits and giggles, though I wouldn't be against that idea if I had the means!

Just had a lovely and productive conversation with Deez about the Festival.

Meetings with local improvisors on the Dublin side are in the works.

More news later this week! Keep yer eyes open!
