Philly Comedians for Haiti

Hey! Unless you've been living under a rock, you've probably caught wind of the devastation in Haiti. A couple of folks around town are organizing some events in an effort to support the relief effort. Check it out!

  • The hilarious and generous Gregg Gethard is donating all proceeds from this month's Bedtime Stories to the Samuel Dalembert Foundation. Samuel Dalembert is the starting center on the 76ers and is also a native of Haiti; his foundation funds a lot of projects down there but is now focused on helping earthquake victims. Even in the best of times, Haitian's have to deal with the unimaginable -- a lot of people live in shacks with no access to public water or any form of health care whatsoever. This month's theme is a tribute to Philly, and features great acts; PowerPoint guru Jon Goff, Secret Pants, Meg and Rob, and the Hopper Brothers are all on the bill.
WHERE: Connie's Ric Rac, 9th and Washington
    WHEN: Wed. Jan 20, 9 p.m. COST: $10
  • Next weekend, Jan. 1/23/2010, ComedySportz Philly is donating a portion of all sales (tickets and concessions) to Mercy Corps. CSz had created a donation page as well.

So if you're at all like me and didn't know how to help, here are two ways you can make a difference just by showing up at a show.

If anybody wants to share ways they've contributed, or wants to talk ideas about how to do more, well I guess that's what this thread can be for.

This is awesome and every little bit is desperately needed.

If your leg is broken, or are a recluse, or maybe Gregg Gethard frightens you for some reason, then you can also simply text "HAITI" to 90999 to donate $10 to the Red Cross. or text "YELE" to 501501 to donate $5 to Wyclef Haiti Relief Fund.

Or do both. Because even if you live under a rock, then you're rent is probably cheap.

In terms of realistic fears Matt, I believe the only allowable excuse is that Gregg Gethard frightens you. Because all comedians are recluses (at least a good amount I know) and only go on stage to work out mental stuff, and a broken leg is what we wish performers upon each other at all times, so that'd be a good thing to finally come to fruition.

And let me dispel the biggest of Gregg Gethard fears: he was only marginally involved with getting Jodie Sweetin hooked on meth. He was not the first to get her to try it. They just shared an apartment and he perpetuated her usage through his erratic behavior.

And with an OK size crowd, we donated a good amount of money to an Animal Shelter during the last show. A big crowd for this would be huge and I hope to see anyone who reads this out.

Hey all!

King Friday will be donating ALL money collected at our Studio 34 show this Thursday at 10 p.m. to relief efforts in Haiti.

As a reminder, these shows are pay-what-you-can. Given that all money collected is going to charity, we recommend $5-$10.

Again, this show is taking place on Thursday, January 21st at 10 p.m. at Studio 34 (4522 Baltimore Avenue, Philadelphia, PA). As always, these shows are BYO.

See you there!

Love, all the Fridays

This is awesome, good job Philly.

Reminder, Gregg Gethard's Bedtime Stories is tonight, and the money is going to the Samuel Dalembert fund. 9pm at Connie's Ric Rac, fools! PLUS, Bonyevitch has promised Gregg probably won't get you hooked on meth.

When everyone's shows are done, it might be cool to do a grand total of all the money the improv community raised. We could post it on the list serve or something.

It's not that I think we should use a tragedy as a PR stunt, but just to say that our companies can organize worthy events like this and have productive results.
