ACROSS THE UNIVERSE

This one goes out to STEPHIE;my favorite new guitarist.

ACROSS THE UNIVERSE
(Lennon/McCartney)

WORDS ARE FLOWING OUT LIKE ENDLESS RAIN
INTO A PAPERCUP,
THEY SLITHER WHILE THEY PASS,
THEY SLIP AWAY ACROSS THE UNIVERSE.

POOLS OF SORROW, WAVES OF JOY
ARE DRIFTING THROUGH MY OPENED MIND,
POSSESSING AND CARESSING ME.

JAI GURU DEVA - OM.

NOTHING'S GONNA CHANGE MY WORLD,
NOTHING'S GONNA CHANGE MY WORLD,
NOTHING'S GONNA CHANGE MY WORLD,
NOTHING'S GONNA CHANGE MY WORLD.

IMAGES OF BROKEN LIGHT WHICH DANCE BEFORE ME
LIKE A MILLION EYES,
THEY CALL ME ON AND ON ACROSS THE UNIVERSE.

THOUGHTS MEANDER LIKE A RESTLESS WIND
INSIDE A LETTERBOX,
THEY TUMBLE BLINDLY
AS THEY MAKE THEIR WAY ACROSS THE UNIVERSE.

JAI GURU DEVA - OM.

NOTHING'S GONNA CHANGE MY WORLD,
NOTHING'S GONNA CHANGE MY WORLD,
NOTHING'S GONNA CHANGE MY WORLD,
NOTHING'S GONNA CHANGE MY WORLD.

SOUNDS OF LAUGHTER, SHADES OF EARTH
ARE RINGING THROUGH MY OPENED EARS,
INCITING AND INVITING ME.

LIMITLESS, UNDYING LOVE
WHICH SHINES AROUND ME LIKE A MILLION SUNS,
IT CALLS ME ON AND ON ACROSS THE UNIVERSE.

JAI GURU DEVA - OM.

NOTHING'S GONNA CHANGE MY WORLD,
NOTHING'S GONNA CHANGE MY WORLD,
NOTHING'S GONNA CHANGE MY WORLD,
NOTHING'S GONNA CHANGE MY WORLD.

THE TALKING HEADS ARE FUNNY

I've long been a fan of the TALKING HEADS.
Their innovative music was always ahead
of the curve.(Those of you who regularly read
this music blog'o'mine are aware that I'm
slightly obsessed with their collaborations
with the great and powerful ENO).
The lyrics of DAVID BYRNE are,to me,particularly
compelling and often hilarious.
This is an improv site but I rarely
find myself commenting on humor in music.
(*note to self:consider commenting on humor
in music more often.Try at all costs, however,to avoid
WEIRD AL YANKOVICH
references*)
That being said, I thought I would post some lyrics
by Mr.Byrne that I find amusing.
Especially for those of you
who are PET owners everywhere:

-----------
ANIMALS(from the masterpiece,FEAR OF MUSIC,produced
by ENO)-(The beat is uptempo and punky, with
a disjointed cadence, and scraping funk guitars)
-----------

I'm mad...And that's a fact
I found out...Animals don't help
Animal think...They're pretty smart
Shit on the ground...See in the dark.

They wander around like a crazy dog
Make a mistake in the parking lot
Always bumping into things
Always let you down down down down.

They're never there when you need them
They never come when you call them
They're never there when you need them
They never come when you call them down down down down.

I know the animals...Are laughing at us
They don't even know...What a joke is
I won't follow...Animal's advice
I don't care.... they're laughing at us.

They're never there when you need them
They never come when you call them
They're never there when you need them
They never come when you call them down down down down.

They say they don't need money
They're livin on nuts and berries
They say animals don't worry
You know animals are hairy?
They think they know what's best
They're making a fool of us
They ought to be more careful
They're setting a bad example
They have untroubled lives
They think everything's nice
They like to laugh at people
They're setting a bad example
(Go ahead) Laugh at me.
_________
FEAR OF MUSIC is loaded with funy, quirky, and flat-out
strange lyrics. It is also just a great musical oddessy
to be a part of.Try it with headphones
and you may be forever altered. In a GOOD way.
This is a desert island disc!

"SOMEONE STOLE" HIS MARIJUANA

Man Tells Cops Someone Stole His Marijuana:eek:

DUBLIN, Ga. (AP) - A school bus driver who reported an apparent burglary at his
home, also told police someone took his marijuana.

John Randolph, 29, made the call Monday, according to a Dublin police
department report. When officers arrived, Randolph said a thief took four ``dime
bags'' of marijuana, along with a .22-caliber pistol, a gold necklace and $30 in
change.

Officer Michael Milton reported that he asked Randolph about the marijuana again
to make sure he heard him correctly.

The bus driver repeated what he said and then showed Milton a small box on a
bedroom dresser where he said he kept the marijuana.

Randolph told the officer he was ``saving the marijuana to smoke when school
was out,'' according to the police report.

Dublin police Capt. Zeke Hobbs said Randolph was not charged with a crime. No
one was arrested in the burglary.

Dublin schools operations director Sam Barrs, who oversees the bus system,
said Wednesday he was investigating the incident.

``We are not going to condone this at all, by any means,'' he said.

Randolph, who is not an employee with the school system, works for McLendon &
Sons Bus Service. Harold McLendon, one of the family owners, said he also was
checking into it.

Detective Sgt. Tommy Cobb, who also went to Randolph's home, said it was the
first time he ever heard of anyone reporting a marijuana theft.

``I asked him, 'Why are you telling us you had marijuana?

' `` Cobb said. ``He said he was always told to tell the truth.''

Randolph declined to comment.

RADIOHEAD METROCARDS NOW AVAILABLE

There has been some very odd Radiohead
promotional items appearing on the streets of NYC.
I was at E.Village books on St.Marks(btwn. 1st & A)
and they had a stack of fake METROCARDS that
say Radiohead instead of Metrocard. It says HAIL TO THE THIEF where the black strip is.On the back it even has usage
instructions, exp. date, and cust.serv. #.It says it expires on June 10th,which is the release date for the new record.I felt foolish attempting to use it on the bus where of COURSE it did'nt WORK.It did make me laugh though.
There is also a home-made looking flyer taped up on a phonebooth
in front of Kims' Video with the little pull-off
phone # strips. It says:"Are you hungry","Are you desperate","Would you do anything", "We want young blood".(just happens to be the title of one of their new songs).
Same ph.# as the Radiohead "metrocard".
The phone just rang and rang when I called it(1-866-868-4433).

NEIL YOUNG

This just in from English rock magazine
NME.I'm especially happy to get ON THE BEACH
on compact disc.It really is a terrific album.

Four NEIL YOUNG albums are to be made available on CD for
the first time next month.

'On the Beach' (1974), 'American Stars n' Bars' (1977),
'Hawks And Doves' (1980) and 'Re.ac.tor' (1981) will be issued
on CD on June 24 for the first time in the US. The albums have
been out of print domestically since their LP pressings went out
of circulation, Rolling Stone reports.

Fans of the singer have called for these albums to be issued on
CD for some time, especially 'On The Beach', a big favourite
with devotees.

There is as yet still no word as to when Young will issue his
classic 1973 live set 'Time Fades Away' on CD. Neil Young
fans on the Internet have long referred to this set, 'On The
Beach' and 'American Stars n' Bars' as the "missing three"
and have campaigned for their release for years.

Neil Young is currently on a solo acoustic tour of Europe, and
has reportedly recorded another album of electric material with
his regular backing band Crazy Horse, with whom he will tour the US in the summer, kicking off in
West Palm Beach, Florida on June 8.

THE STROKES

Word is that our very own STROKES
began working on their 2nd record
with NIGEL GODRICH(RADIOHEAD,BECK,PAVEMENT)
at the producers' helm.
Apparently, the fit was not a fruitful one
and they are going back to their
original producer, which makes sense to me.
I love wine and I love beer but not
in the same mug.
THE STROKES are better off without
Mr. Godrich.Genius or not.He does a VERY
different thing.
Still,I can't wait to hear the new Strokes
record.

R.I.P. JUNE CARTER CASH

Sad news today in the world of country music.
JOHNNY CASH himself has been very frail and
ill for years now.I'm not sure that his heart
can withstand the loss of his lifetime
partner. If you're one to pray then pray for
Johnny Cash.

Associated Press
Friday, May 16, 2003; Page B06

NASHVILLE -- June Carter Cash, the Grammy-winning member of one of
country music's pioneering families and the wife of country giant Johnny Cash,
died May 15 in a Nashville hospital of complications of heart surgery. She was 73.

Her husband of 35 years and other family members were at her bedside, manager
Lou Robin said. She had been critically ill after May 7 surgery to replace a heart
valve.

Mrs. Cash was a singer, songwriter, musician, actress and author. She performed
with her husband on recordings and on stage, doing songs such as "Jackson,"
which won a Grammy in 1967, and "If I Were a Carpenter," which won one in
1970. . Their duets included "It Ain't Me Babe" in 1964 and "If I Had a Hammer"
in 1972.

She was co-writer of her husband's 1963 hit "Ring of Fire," which was about their
falling in love. In his 1997 autobiography, Johnny Cash described how his wife
stuck with him through his years of amphetamine abuse.

"June said she knew me -- knew the kernel of me, deep inside, beneath the drugs
and deceit and despair and anger and selfishness, and knew my loneliness," he
wrote. "She said she could help me. . . . If she found my pills, she flushed them
down the toilet. And find them she did; she searched for them, relentlessly."

June Carter was born June 23, 1929, in Maces Spring, Va. Her mother, Maybelle
Carter, was in the Carter Family music group with a cousin, Sara Carter, and Sara's
husband, A.P. Carter. In 1927, they made some of the first recordings of country
music.

The family act broke up, but mother and daughters June, Helen and Anita continued
on as Mother Maybelle & the Carter Sisters, with little June playing autoharp.

Starting in 1939, the sisters starred in a radio show on XERA in Del Rio, Tex., that
could be heard as far away as Saskatchewan.

The Carters went on to become staples of the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville.

The Carters' harmony still inspires singers today, and Maybelle's "Carter lick" on the guitar has become one of the most influential
techniques in country music.

In the late 1950s, after her marriage to country singer Carl Smith broke up, June Carter moved to New York to study acting at the behest
of director Elia Kazan, who had seen her perform while scouting Tennessee for movie locations.

In 1961, she turned down an offer to work on a variety show that had Woody Allen as one of the writers, agreeing instead to tour with
Johnny Cash for $500 a week. They married in 1968 after he proposed to her onstage on London, Ontario.

In a 1987 Associated Press interview, June Carter Cash described her husband as "probably the most unusual, fine, unselfish person I've
known."

"There's a lot of power to him," she said then. "I've seen him on shows with people with a No. 1 record or a lot of No. 1 records, but
when John walks on that stage, the rest of 'em might as well leave."

In 1999, she released an acoustic album, "Press On," that amounted to a musical autobiography and won her another Grammy. The
album, her first in a quarter-century, followed her career from its beginning through her then 31-year marriage and collaboration with
Cash.

"There's a lot of people who I love -- fans that I've known through the years -- who will be glad I did it," she said about the album at the
time. "And maybe some other people . . . wonder what Johnny Cash's wife is really like."

In 1979, she wrote an autobiography, "Among My Klediments," and in 1987, she released a memoir, "From the Heart."

June Carter Cash did occasional acting roles, including the part of Robert Duvall's mother in the 1997 film "The Apostle." With her
husband, she periodically performed at Billy Graham crusades.

Johnny and June Carter Cash had a son, John Carter Cash, in 1970. She was also the mother of country singer Carlene Carter, whose
father was Carl Smith, and singer Rosanne Cash is her stepdaughter.

FREE JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER

A while back I wrote about the
upcoming season of FREE concerts
available in NYC.Well,
after Delaneys' class on Sunday
The Wife and I went up to Lincoln Center
with her Mom and some friends of ours
for the FREE Verizon Music Festival.
We got there in time to get some good
blanket space near the fountain and just in time
to catch the last 2 acts of the day.At sunset,
no less.
The 1st act was an all-female Jazz ensemble
called DIVA.They were very good and appeared to
be having a blast up there.
The last act,however,was,tremendous.
WYNTON MARSALIS AND THE LINCOLN CENTER JAZZ ORCHESTRA.They played a good solid hour of
mostly THELONIOUS MONK tunes.(An appropriate
choice when you realize that Monk grew up
right behind Lincoln Center).
This is a world-class Jazz outfit and
we sat there on a blanket outside
and caught the whole thing for FREE.
(Ace$Thugg might have called it his
Bargain of The Day! )
The first great FREE gig of the season
people. And if you know the Jazz standard,
SING,SING,SING then you can imagine how
remarkable it was to hear some of the worlds' best players
layin' it out there, solo after solo.Everyone
of them masters of their instruments.
This would have usually been a $60 ticket(minimum).
The FREE music season has been "officially"
launched!!And in THIS dreary economy,
what's not to love about THAT?!

The new MARYLIN MANSON record,THE GOLDEN AGE OF THE GROTESQUE
has entered the charts at #1,beating out platinum-rapper 50 CENT.
The album sold a measly 118,000 copies but it was enough
to give Manson his 1st #1 album in 5 years.
He may not make the most interesting
music but he is a VERY entertaining and honest guy.
One of the best interviews out there.

LED ZEPPELIN LIVE!!

If you LED ZEPPELIN aficianados(of which I include myself)
thought that your collection had reached it's saturation point,
then think again. Here comes the bomb you've been
waiting for:

OFFICIAL LED ZEPPELIN PRESS RELEASE

Led Zeppelin Live At Last On DVD And CD:
Legendary performances due May 27 with rare and unreleased material
Mar 07 2003

THE mother lode of Led Zeppelin live recordings has at long last arrived! Slated for a simultaneous May 27th. release are LED ZEPPELIN DVD, a two-disc set, and HOW THE WEST WAS WON, a three-CD set. Long sought-after by Zeppelin devotees and collectors, this marks the first-ever official release of these are and legendary performances, which span the group's entire career. much-rumored and eagerly anticipated, the DVD and CD sets each contain entirely different material, so there is no overlap between the two releases. s a gesture to the band's millions of fans, both sets are specially priced - the 2-DVD set at 29.98 list, and the 3-CD set at 26.98 list.

Clocking in at nearly five and a half hours, 'LED ZEPPELIN DVD' has been culled from just a handful of performances which were ever filmed during the band's extraordinary lifetime. As guitarist Jimmy Page explains, 'We were never really part of the pop scene. It was never what Led Zeppelin was supposed to be about. ur thing was playing live. In that sense, Zeppelin was very much an underground band. The fact that it became as successful as it did was something that was almost out of our control. We actually shunned commercialism, which is why so little official footage of the band has ever been seen before.'

Featured are performances from: the Royal Albert Hall, just one year after the release of their debut album; their triumphant five-night run at London's Earl's Court in May 1975; and their record-breaking shows at England's Knebworth Festival in August 1979, just one year before the death of drummer John Bonham led to the band's dissolution. Also included are songs from New York's Madison Square Garden in July 1973 [that] were not included in 'THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME' concert Film, the only previously released live Zeppelin footage. Other highlights of the DVD include: extremely rare television appearances, among them a performance for Danish television in March 1969; promotional clips; TV interviews; behind-the scenes material; and even a bit of fan-shot 'bootleg' footage.

Visually and sonically stunning, 'LED ZEPPELIN DVD' has been painstakingly restored, remixed, and remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround, DTS, and PCM Two-Channel Stereo - under the personal supervision of JIMMY PAGE and director Dick Carruthers.

Recorded in California, 'HOW THE WEST WAS WON' is a brilliant audio complement to the DVD. The material on the three CDs has been culled from two of the most legendary and incendiary live performances by Led Zeppelin, at the Los Angeles Forum and Long Beach Arena on June 25th and 27th, 1972. Melded together and sequenced to replicate a single concert from beginning to end, it captures the band at the height of their formidable powers. Among the highlights are a 25-plus minute version of 'Dazed And Confused' and a 23-minute medley based around 'Whole Lotta Love.' Alongside such classics as 'Stairway To Heaven' and 'Rock And Roll,' these shows find the band introducing songs from their forthcoming 'HOUSES OF THE HOLY' album, which would not be released for another nine months.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GODFATHER!!GET ON UP !!

Yesterday it was down to Battery Park
for the RIVER TO RIVER FESTIVAL
and a FREE concert from
The Godfather of Soul and Funk,
JAMES BROWN.
It was drizzling,it was packed,it was cheesy,
and it was everything I'd hoped
for and less. And More!It was my first James Brown show!
There was the sketchy guest-singer
who could'nt quite handle her JANIS JOPLIN
cover(or the dress she was trying to wear).
There was the classic 10 minute intro
from JB'S current band:THE SOUL GENERALS.
There were the two dancers that came
bursting onto the stage every 3 songs or so,wearing
different designer bicycle shorts(and waving flags-
during LIVING IN AMERICA).
There were the excellent back-up singers:THE BITERSWEETS.
And then JAMES BROWN himself!!
He played about 10 classics from SOUL POWER to
THE PAYBACK and PLEASE,PLEASE,PLEASE.
There was the guy that kept rushing out
to put a cape on JB and take him off-stage.
There was JB flinging the cape OFF,refusing to QUIT!
It was SEX MACHINE.
It was THIS IS A MANS' WORLD (misinterpreted
by a number of feminists in the crowd, who shook their heads in disbelief).
There was the painfully sincere
audience-participation-sing-along
of GOD BLESS AMERICA.
It was pure Vegas in Battery Park.
With a view of Lady Liberty out in the bay,
torch aflamin'.
And to top it off it was THE GODFATHERS'
Birthday! They wheeled out a cake and
we all sang "Happy Birthday Godfather".
The cake had 70- some candles.
And he STILL has some moves.
"The Hardest Working Man in Showbiz" indeed..
GET ON UP!

BEFORE UNLEASHING "HAIL TO THE THIEF" RADIOHEAD BREAKS IT DOWN FOR YOU IN 4 PARTS....

In 2001, around the time that his first child was
born, Thom Yorke took the habit of spending the
early evenings driving alone around the fields
and by-ways surrounding his home just as dusk
was drawing in. "I've got one of these cars with
the natty blue headlights and the colours of the
headlights got mixed in with the wild-life running
into the bushes. The twilight invoked a
dream-state within me. It's incredibly beautiful
where we live but I used to listen to this
Penderecki tune that's really ominous and scary
and I'd just get this perverse sense of
foreboding."

These solitary drives helped inspire the ideas
that bolster up much of what would eventually
become Radiohead's 6th album. "I wrote a lot of
stuff quickly: pages and pages of notes that
seemed pretty incoherent at first. Most of it was
taken from the radio because -suddenly being a
parent- I'd be confronted by the radio giving a
news report every hour of the day. It was during
the Afghan war and it would ring bells in my
head. I'd sit there making mad lists on pieces of
paper of the people in the public eye that I had it in for." (laughs)

"We were taking six months off and Ed asked me, 'Can you put down some ideas for the new songs
you've got kicking around?' I wasn't trying to write anything -I was just putting demos together for the
others to listen to. When we got together I said, 'If nobody likes this new stuff, it's fine by me -we'll
start again'. But I got good responses from everybody else."

In early 2002 the quintet reconvened at their Oxfordshire rehearsal/recording studio for six whole
months of ironing the new material into workable shape. "We're an old-fashioned band in the sense
that we work very intensely on our arrangements", claims Jonny Greenwood. "The rehearsals were all
recorded endlessly and we'd eventually got a compilation of the best songs, so that once we reach the
studio we could present Nigel (Godrich) with finished material and work quickly."

The group also began performing the new material live at European shows during the same period. For
Colin Greenwood, "One of the starting points for the new album was "I Might Be Wrong", the live
compilation of songs from "Kid A" and "Amnesiac" we recorded a couple of years ago... It gave us an
idea of what could happen if we went in and recorded songs for "Hail To The Thief" after having played
them in concert."
