PINK FLOYD for $9.74?!?!YOU MUST BE YANKIN' MY CHAIN!!

NO I'm NOT "yankin' your chain".
TOWER RECORDS has a
sale,now, on much
of their "rock" inventory.
The usual suspects:LED ZEP,
AC/DC,DOORS etc..
25% off on a LOT of stuff.
I't's one of those good
times to plug the holes
in your classic rock
collection.
I picked up the last "real"
PINK FLOYD album(the Great -
ROGER WATERS was still IN
the band)THE FINAL CUT.
Aside from the song,NOT NOW JOHN,
it is one of the LEAST commercial
records that Pink Floyd released.
At least sales-wise.I had this on
vinyl for years(bought it when I was 11,I think)
and needed an update.
Their sale had it listed
at the inexplicable price
of $9.74.
So I adopted it
and brought it home
to live with me and The Wife.
"NOT NOW JOHN, WE'VE GOTTA GET ON WITH THE FILM SHOW!"
"FUCK ALL THAT...FUCK ALL THAT!"
White Stripes tickets go
on sale in the morning.sshhh...
:inlove:

GOT TICKETS?

I realize that I've
started getting a little heavy
in the WHITE STRIPES department these days.
(they'll be on CONAN 4 times
this week!).I will attempt to check
myself before I wreck myself.
But I HAD to mention that
I GOT my tickets and I
WILL be attending their
Central Park SUMMERSTAGE show
on Wed.July 23rd at 5:00 P.M.
$37.00.
I believe this show has
precious FEW tix left,if any.
Should be a beautiful
summer afternoon for some
dirty,white,Detroit blues.
Bring sun block.

RADIOHEAD SAY: 'HAIL TO THE THIEF'

Finally.
A good friend of mine(and great drummer)MELLE, just came to visit
from L.A. yesterday and brought it as
a house-warming gift for my wife and I! An
advanced copy of
HAIL TO THE THIEF! Final,clean,FINISHED
mix.On my second listen,Now.
Damn!
You will NOT be disappointed!They
simply CONTINUE to deliver the noise, without peer. For those of you who were missing
the" Rock" opposed to the "weird shit",
Jonny Greenwood,my friends, is back
with bite.But they don't lose
the "weird shit" either.The piano.The rythm section.The FX.And.
as always..the most amazing THOM YORKE
on vocals.
Don't blink,my friends.We will all look back
on the"RADIOHEAD ERA" and tell
people we were there. They are a band
on a serious roll......
Simply put:They rule it.
Promise to BUY a copy too.
I am in NO WAY ready
to "review " this complex
record, yet.

CLASH ON BROADWAY

No,they are NOT proceeding without
the late JOE STRUMMER.Can you
imagine?"Ladies and Gentlemen..THE CLASH..
featuring SCOTT WEILAND!!!"
Me either.
But I had the good fortune
of finding a never been played, sealed
copy of CLASH ON BROADWAY in the "used"section at KIMS' VIDEO
for some unfathomable reason.Trust me,THIS
was a brand-new copy.Guess I deserve a break.
What a score though.
63 tracks.
3 discs.
Demos,previously unreleased,LIVE! cuts,unedited
versions,classic tracks,lyrics,extensive liner notes(from LESTER BANGS,etc.)
Everything for THE CLASH fan in your life.
In my case,ME.
A $50 box-set that I somehow found
for $24.00!!!
Essential.

PYRAMID SONG

Have'nt been able to read the lyrics yet
for HAIL TO THE THIEF so I went back
and looked at some of the old song lyrics.
This is PYRAMID SONG from
AMNESIAC.A good example of the visual
picture that THOM YORKE paints
with his words.

PYRAMID SONG

I jumped in the river and what did I see?
Black-eyed angels swam with me
A moon full of stars and astral cars
All the things I used to see
All my lovers were there with me
All my past and futures
And we all went to heaven in a little row boat
There was nothing to fear and nothing to doubt

I jumped into the river
Black-eyed angels swam with me
A moon full of stars and astral cars
And all the things I used to see
All my lovers were there with me
All my past and futures
And we all went to heaven in a little row boat
There was nothing to fear and nothing to doubt

There was nothing to fear and nothing to doubt
There was nothing to fear and nothing to doubt

NEW RADIOHEAD LYRICS

A PUNCH-UP AT A WEDDING(from the upcoming HAIL TO THE THIEF-
out June 9th)
no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no
i don't know why you bother.
nothing's ever good enough for you.
i was there and it wasn't like that.
you came here just to dig the dirt.

you had to piss on our parade
you had to shred our big day
you had to ruin it for all concerned
like a drunken punchup at a wedding.

hypocrite opportunist
don't infect me with your poison
a bully in a china shop
when i turn round stay frozen to the spot.

you had to piss on our parade
you had to shred our big day
you had to ruin it for all concerned
like a drunken punchup at a wedding.
the pointless snide remarks
of hammerheaded sharks
the pot will call the kettle black
in a drunken punchup at a wedding.

STEPHEN MALKMUS at IRVING PLAZA

The Wife and I
have decided to pass
on the problematic FIELD DAY FESTIVAL.
Too many $$ mixed with a long journey
and no tent.I think we'll wait
until RADIOHEAD comes
back around on their own.
60,000 people is just TOO BIG
at this stage in the game.
I have seen many of the bands already
and if it was free and the transpo.
was all worked out and we had a crash-pad
near the beach then, sure,We'd go ANYWAY.
But with the current reality
we have decided to opt out.
INSTEAD..to go with our NEIL YOUNG plans
and (my) WHITE STRIPES plans
we are also now going to see
STEPHEN MALKMUS AND THE JICKS
at Irving Plaza on Thurs.MAY 15th.
This is going to be a great show
to promote his excellent
new record,PIG LIB(Matador Records)
and it's only $19!
I suggest you buy NOW.
:inlove:

YEAH,YEAH,YEAHS

Our local rock-critic darlings,the
YEAH,YEAH,YEAHS are back with
a couple of tune-up shows at IRVING PLAZA.
Tuning up for what you ask?
Well, when their new,full-length
record is released I am sure that they'll be out
on the road touring for a long time to come.
If the new stuff is HALF as good as the hype
then it'll be really good.
Even if it sucks you can count on
KAREN O. to put on an entertaining
display of showmanship.
MAY 7
MAY 8
Irving Plaza.
You might not be able to catch them
in a place this small again.

R.I.P. NINA SIMONE

Nina Simone Dies

Jazz singer/pianist was seventy

1933-2003
Nina Simone, whose legendary singing career touched on jazz, folk, pop, blues, R&B and gospel, died at her home in France today; she was seventy.

Born Eunice Waymon on February 21, 1933 in Tryon, North Carolina, Simone got her start singing in church and self-taught herself to play piano and organ by age seven. She attended New York's prestigious Julliard School of Music, before playing gigs along the east coast. In 1959 she scored her biggest hit, and only charting pop single, with a cover of Gershwin's "I Loves You Porgy" from Porgy and Bess, which reached as high as Number Eighteen.

Though she didn't chart again, Simone remained popular throughout the Sixties, and recorded some of her most enduring songs during that decade, several of which became anthems for the Civil Rights movement. Simone's first protest song, "Mississippi Goddam," was inspired by the death of activist Medgar Evers.

The mid-Seventies were a difficult period during which Simone's audience began to decrease, and she retired from making music and relocated to Switzerland, the U.K. and other locations. She returned in 1978 with the release of Baltimore and recorded and toured sporadically afterwards. A 1987 perfume commercial that used her recording of "My Baby Just Cares for Me" rekindled interest in Simone's music, and Pete Townshend enlisted her to sing on 1989's The Iron Man, his musical based on the children's book by Ted Hughes.

In 1993 she relocated to the south of France, and that same year she released her last studio recording, A Single Woman.
_______________
The Wife is very sad today as NINA SIMONE was one of her
favorite,if not her VERY favorite singer.
I must admit that she had a voice,with attitude,like no other before/since.
On June 28th,2001,she played her last New York City gig
at CARNEGIE HALL.It was my birthday that day and I decided
to go party instead.Damn.If only I'd known.
:(

SSHHHH

june six.if this show

down and put a heavy curse upon
you.

CONGRATULATIONS

I'd like to give a shout-out to the ass-kickin'
BROOKLYN TRIVIA CLUB!!!
Alive?Dead?or Canadian?
I believe that Freddy Mercury said it best
when he said:

I've paid my dues
Time after time
I've done my sentence
But committed no crime
And bad mistakes
I've made a few
I've had my share of sand kicked in my face
But I've come through

We are the champions - my friends
And we'll keep on fighting - till the end
We are the champions
We are the champions
No time for losers
'Cause we are the champions - of Brooklyn

I've taken my bows
And my curtain calls
You brought me fame and fortune
And everything that goes with it
I thank you all

But it's been no bed of roses
No pleasure cruise
I consider it a challenge
Before the whole human race
And I ain't gonna lose

We are the champions - my friends
And we'll keep on fighting - till the end
We are the champions
We are the champions
No time for losers
'Cause we are the champions-of Brooklyn

We are the champions - my friends
And we'll keep on fighting - till the end
We are the champions
We are the champions
No time for losers
'Cause we are the champions-of Brooklyn

DYLAN

Just for the record. My favorite DYLAN
album is,by far,HIGHWAY 61.
It's funny,strange,at times quite uptempo.
It has "hits"such as Like A Rolling Stone
and unusual cuts like The Ballad Of A Thin Man.
This is the Dylan record for people
who don't LIKE Dylan.

ps.Happy Birthday Henny Hemp!

SOLD

So I (reluctantly) sold the ARAB STRAP tickets
because there were too many conflicts that
evening. My friend Robert is flying in from
Seatlle,The Wife is having a Gallery Opening AND
I'd have to go straight from the show to work
as a restroom-attendant.ARRGGGGGGGGHHH.
When it rains it pours..or something.
Anyway..the person that bought them seemed
REALLY happy so that's cool.
Hopefully they'll come back around SOON,
this time as headliners.
Their 5th album,MONDAYS AT THE HUG AND PINT
was just released yesterday on MATADOR RECORDS.
Looking forward to hearing it.

THE STOOGES

Just heard that IGGY POP AND THE STOOGES
played a VERY RARE reunion show
outside of Los Angeles last weekend at
THE COACHELLA VALLEY MUSIC AND ARTS FESTIVAL.
"The Godfather of Punk" and his old
band from Detroit broke up over 30 years ago.
But their influence on Punk and alternative rock in general
remains immesurable.
Let's hope that they return to the scene of the crime
and play a gig here in the apple.
THAT would be something to SEE.

*_ Raw Power

Dance to the beat
Of the living dead
Lose sleep baby
And stay away from bed
Raw power is sure to come
a runnin' to you

If you're alone
And you got the shakes
So am I baby
And I got what it takes
Raw power will surely come
Running to you

Raw power got a healin' hand
Raw power can destroy a man
Raw power is more than soul
It's got a son called rock and roll
Raw power honey just won't quit
Raw power I can feel it
Raw power baby can't be beat
Poppin' eyes and flashin' feet

Everybody's always tryin to tell me
What to do
Don't you try
Don 't you try to tell me what to do

Look in the eye
Of the savage girl
Fall deep in love
In the underworld
Raw power is sure to come
Runnin' to you

If you're alone
And you got the fear
So am I baby
Let's move on out of here
Raw power is sure to come
A runnin' to you

Raw power got a magic touch
Raw power is much too much
Happiness is guaranteed
It was made for you and me
Raw power honey just won't quit
Raw power I can feel it
Raw power honey can't be beat
Get down and kiss my feet

Raw power's got no place to go
Raw power honey it don't want to know
Raw power is a guaranteed OD
Raw power is laughin' at you and me
And this is what I want to know
Can you feel it?
Can you feel it?
Can you feel it?
Can you feel it?
Raw power
Can you feel it?

YEAH YEAH YEAHS

Just picked up FEVER TO TELL,
the full-length L.P. from
Williamsburgs' own YEAH YEAH YEAHS.
This is one naughty,raucous album.
Pounding drums keep a tribal garage-rock
cadence,while the guitars buzz
and scrape along with the
VERY distinct vocals of KAREN O.
Like them or not you can't deny that
she is a local star who is ready
to burst out over the national scene.
She has attitude and wackiness to spare.
Provocative and clamorous but still,somehow,
melodic. The punk rock kidz are gonna
eat this shit UP.
If you liked their E.P.
then I'm not sure why you're reading
this and not on your way to get FEVER TO TELL.

DAVID BOWIE LYRICS

BEWLAY BROTHERS(from Hunky Dory)
And so the story goes
they wore the clothes
They said the things
to make it seem improbable
The whale of a lie
like they hope it was
And the Goodmen of Tomorrow
Had their feet in the wallow
And their heads of Brawn
were nicer shorn
And how they bought their positions with saccharin and trust
And the world was asleep
to our latent fuss
Sighing, the swirl through the streets
Like the crust of the sun
The Bewlay Brothers
In our Wings that Bark
Flashing teeth of Brass
Standing tall in the dark
Oh, And we were Gone
Hanging out with your Dwarf Men
We were so turned on
By your lack of conclusions

I was Stone and he was Wax
So he could scream,
and still relax, unbelievable
And we frightened the small children away
And our talk was old
and dust would flow
Thru our veins and Lo!
it was midnight
Back o' the kitchen door
Like the grim face
on the Cathedral floor
And the solid book we wrote
Cannot be found today

And it was Stalking time
for the Moonboys
The Bewlay Brothers
With our backs on the arch
In the Devil-may-be-here
But He can't sing about that
Oh, And we were Gone
Real Cool Traders
We were so Turned On
You thought we were Fakers

Now the dress is hung,
the ticket pawned
The Factor Max that proved the fact
Is melted down
And woven on the edging of my pillow
Now my Brother lays upon the Rocks
He could be dead, He could be not
He could be You
He's Camelian, Comedian, Corinthian and Caricature
"Shooting-up Pie-in-the-Sky"
The Bewlay Brothers
In the feeble and the Bad
The Bewlay Brothers
In the Blessed and Cold
In the Crutch-hungry Dark
Was where we flayed our Mark
Oh, and we were Gone
Kings of Oblivion
We were so Turned On
In the Mind-Warp Pavilion

Lay me place and bake me Pie
I'm starving for me Gravy
Leave my shoes, and door unlocked
I might just slip away
Just for the Day, Hey!
Please come Away, Hey!
Just for the day,Hey!
Away!
Away!

ENO

ENO and his TWO TRILOGIES.
If you're one of those people that knows
the TALKING HEADS for "BURNING DOWN THE HOUSE",
"ONCE IN A LIFETIME",or "LIFE DURING WAR-TIME"(aka-
'this aint no party, this aint no disco') and not much ELSE
then perhaps it's time to branch out a little.
Let's break it down:
BRIAN ENO produced 3 records for the TALKING HEADS
in the late 70's.They are essential listening.
MORE SONGS ABOUT BUILDINGS AND FOOD
FEAR OF MUSIC
REMAIN IN LIGHT
These records are absolutely amazing and I
highly reccomend you check into them.
ENO produced these records on the heels of
working on BOWIES' "Berlin-trilogy"
(HEROES,LOW,LODGER).
That's TWO incredible trilogies that ENO
worked on in a matter of 4 years!
That's what I'd call productive.
