Fun Fact

The Cincinnati tradition of putting "chili" on got dogs and spaghetti started in a hot dog stand run by two Macedonian brothers. They created a beef and tomato stew with Middle Eastern spices. Italian customers requested that the stew be put on spaghetti.
The brothers', Tom and John Kiradjieff, hot dog stand became the Empress Chili chain, named after the theater that was next to the first hot dog stand.
Many of the "chili" restaurants in Cincinnatti were founded by former Empress employees most notably Skyline chili in 1949.

In chapter 3, The Case for the Daydreamer, in the book Let Your Mind Alone: And other More Or Less Inspirational Pieces , a parody of self-help books, James Thurber advises against a plan for incrementally saving for a trip to Italy, because he predicts hat in the six years it would take to save for the trip Italy will most likely be at war and closed to tourists. Let Your Mind Alone was published in 1937.

Fun Fact

As part of the lease agreement for Burning Man the organizers have to leave the federal land it occurs on virtually untouched. A nine-mile fence goes around the site of Burning Man to catch windblown trash. It is the first structure to go up and the last to come down. After the event volunteers scour the area for stuff that was left. When they are finished, the Bureau of Land Management randomly picks 60 sectors, each a tenth of an acre and searches it for trash. If more than 3.8 square inches worth of detritus appear in any of the sectors, Burning Man loses its lease. The found garbage in each sector is placed into a single Ziploc bag. The total garbage for the 6 acres typically fits in a single medium-size Priority Mail box.

According to archaeologist Carolyn White the port-a-potties at Burning Man practically structure the whole city. She believes that latrines may have played a similar role in ancient cities.

In 1837 NYU erected a building at the Northeast corner of the parade grounds at Washington Square. The stones were cut by prisoners at Sing Sing. The members of New York city’s Stonecutters Guild organized New York City’s first mass labor demonstration in response. The protest lasted for days, and NYU had to call in the 27th National Guard to drive them out of Washington Square.

Happy Labor day oh seekers of knowledge.

America currently has a shortage of truck drivers. 51,000 are needed to meet demand from companies such as Walmart and Amazon. The driver shortage is leading to higher prices and delayed deliveries.

May be verified in the the Bottom Line section of the June 8, 2018 issue of The Week magazine. The information originally appeared in the Washington Post.

One would think that this problem could be solved by the market.

Kayfabe a term for professional wrestling's suspension of disbelief started out as carnival worker's code for when a mark was nearby telling the wrestler to get back into character. One origin for term was that it is a portmanteau of Kay Fabian a mythical old time wrestler who may not have existed. Or it might come from the British term "keep cavey" or be on the lookout.

I read this on my way home from work today.

While on vacation in Washington State in October 1949, Supreme Court Justice William O Douglas's horse fell down a mountain while the judge was riding it. He wound up breaking 23 ribs. He was not very well liked on the court and the law clerks joked that fellow Judge Felix Frankfurter had tripped the horse.

He served on the court for another 26 years.

May be verified in Scorpions: The battles and Triumphs of FDR’s Great Supreme Court Justices by Noah Feldman pg. 321

I didn't even know that we had that many ribs. Turns out he had one unbroken rib.
