Nominate a user to be a moderator

WF for Moderator

Wrong Forum seems very un-jerky to me.
He/She never seems sarcastic, even when
verbally attacked. Nice, even temper, etc.

I would cast my vote for Wrong Forum, assuming he/she reveals to mullaney (and mullaney only) his/her actual identity. If mullaney is satisfied that WF is a six-month-plus member of the community, then so am I.

For me, Wrong Forum is like the kid in your class in elementary school who tries to be the teacher, but instead comes off as the know it all you want to deck.

From a teacher perspective, you want to encourage constructive behavior, but find a tad less conspicuous way to bring it out of the student without affecting the rest of the class.

I feel like it's like this:

Stat Man tell us about Stats.
UCB Classes tells us about UCB Classes.
and Wrong Forum tells us when a post is in the Wrong Forum.

It's all pretty useful information, and it's usually presented in a nice, fun way. And I completely understand why each of those real people chose a pseudonym for those respective "duties."

I don't really understand why people have such a vitriolic reaction to being told that the thread they started might be better off in the correct forum, but most of the rants resulting from WF's posts have not really been instigated by anything actually written by WF.

Obviously Mullaney has no problem with it - and in fact gave it the thumbs up. And since this is his living room, that's good enough for me.

I nominate benorbeen. Seriously.

Term limits for moderators? I don't really see that happening, practically speaking. Are you really going to want to school new people every 3-6 months, Mullaney? Why not let people get experienced?

And Dunford is totally right about Wrong Forum. Whether he's right or not, he's condescending and annoying. The proper way to deal with misplaced threads is to PM the moderator, not post 5 paragraphs on every misplaced thread. At least that's how every other Internet message board handles it.

Edit: Obviously Mullaney needs to know who his moderators are in real life. I'm sure he would never make the mistake of not getting that information. We don't need to know. Although we all know who WF is.

I agree with Variety Underground...hmm another pseudonym.

That's why there's a link to report posts. I don't think that everyone that makes a minor mistake should be made an example to everyone else on the IRC.

I also second benorbeen.

Regardless of the issue of whether or not a post is in the right forum [or not]...I think Wrong Forum sucks. Mostly because of the methods he used (as described rather well by Dunford), which are/were very very annoying.

Also, any good moderator can move "wrong posts" to their right place. We don't need a dude named Wrong Forum to do it...in fact, we especially don't need a dude named Wrong Forum to do it.

I nominate Dunford.

Not interested. I don't need this silly place! IRC is for pussies!

benorbeen weighs in on Wrong Forum:
I like the reputation this member has established. While I admit to never having read every single word of this member's posts, I get a general sense of a desire to educate in a friendly, back-patting manner that one has posted in an inappropriate area. While feeling like a bit, this bit serves a very good function as it has grabbed our attention. Education leads to changes in behavior, and as a result, Wrong Forum's presence I think has made people more aware of where they should place their posts in a multi-forum IRC world.

My feeling is that if mullaney knows in real life who this person is, then he can waive his own 6-month rule in this case and allow Wrong Forum his/her place as moderator. I think knowing Wrong Forum's real-life identity is inconsequential for these boards, if a solid reputation has been established and one's behavior-potential is understood.

I also get the sense that Wrong Forum is rather unbiased, but also open to constructive criticism. A good listener.
Personally, I am a little intimidated by a moderator, esp. if that person is no fan of me as established by past posts.

Queen of Questions

I am personally undecided about WF, if my opinion counts on that. Likely not, but here it is anyway:

I can see both sides of this debate. It appears WF is genuine in the desire to keep the mess cleaned up on the IRC, regarding topics being in the wrong forum. There's nothing wrong with wanting to keep things organized so that everyone can find what they're looking for, and important or really interesting stuff doesn't get lost in the shuffle that is the off-topic. I don't really see it as being a jerk to gently and politely nudge someone in the right direction with a thread, although I've noticed that sometimes they do come off sounding a little bit condescending. It's all in the wording, I'm sure. I'm also sure that there are plenty of people who think I'm condescending as well, so, who am I to judge that? *shrug*

I think the real question regarding WF is this: If everyone discovered that the real person behind WF's mask was...oh...let's say Mullaney - would they re-read those posts and realize that they weren't condescending at all? Are people's reactions really about what he's saying, how he's saying it, why he's saying it....or are they about "Dude, who the hell do you think you are to tell me where to post this? I don't even KNOW you!"

Not to beat a dead horse, but folks have a difficult time accepting newbies, especially someone showing any type of authority when they're new to the place. How many of you ever gave a substitute teacher hell back in school? I know I'm guilty of at least rolling my eyes when they weren't looking, a time or two.

Anyway, like I said, I can't make up my mind whether I'd personally want WF to be a mod or not. There's that whole thing where some of their posts have felt tinged with condescension - but there's also the fact that they were willing to publicly admit they were wrong, when they suggested the wrong forum for a particular thread. Hmmm...then there's also the fact that they really should have been paying more attention to little details like that, if they were going to speak out about where that thread belonged in the first place.

I'm not saying hang them up by their shoelaces for making a single mistake, by no means. I'm just saying that if they'd had the power to move that thread and had done so, it would have been moved to the wrong forum, then would have had to be moved again. That would have created MORE confusion, not less - and people would still be fussing about the whole incident.

All that said...I vote for Telfer.

I nominate Gypsy to fill that 'Not in NYC' spot. Also, shes not involved in the improv community, but shows that she does want to learn about it. I think the IRC could use somebody to represent the people who found this place through methods other than being interested in improv, if this makes any sense.

My second thought would be UncleSally. Shes in NYC, in the improv scene, knows what shes talkin about. It also seems that she has been willing to give out advice on a few occasions, which is what is needed, it seems.

That's exactly how I feel. It's easy to misread people's tone online, and I think people are projecting a little bit. How can you create a persona that's dedicated to correcting people and not run the risk of coming across as condescending? I've found WF (for the most part) to be polite and respectful, whereas some of the people he's corrected have been irrationally defensive and rude.

Sure, he's anal, and he's doing something I wouldn't want to do, but I think his heart is in the right place.

I second (or fourth or whatever) nominations for Gypsy, UncleSally and Telfer.

I have formally PM'd Mullaney letting him know that I am interested in helping out, and I just want to thank those of you who were nice enough to think of me.
