If they're foodies, there's no shortage of opportunities. H&H willl ship bagels and such. So will Zabar's. (Not cheap, though) Katz's Deli also ships deli stuff.

I completely agree with the MOMA and Transit Museum catalogs though.
How come it's been 3 posts and there hasn't been a single crack or hooker joke yet? Has this city been too sanitized? Sigh.

Fish Eddy's (there's one on Montague now in BHeights) has New Yorker cartoon coffee mugs. I'm sure other places have em too, but that's where I saw em.

A subscription to the Nation is New Yorky. One of the best things about NY, I think.
