New York Baseball

With baseball season upon us, I ask this question of not just native New Yorkers, like myself, but to those who grew up outside this fair city (and the rest of the metro area):

New York Yankees or New York Mets?

Which is your favorite team? If you had to choose to root for only ONE team, who would you root for? Any great memories of watching a particualr game, whether it be at the stadium or at home w/ your friends?

(If neither is to your liking, then what is your favorite team? Don't be shy. Though this thread is in the New York board and the main question is asking the New York improv scene to choose between two teams, if you choose neither than share your favorite team with the entire community.)

BTW: I'm a die-hard Yankee fan.... and when the Yanks won the World Series in 1996, I was in Queens at my cousin's kid's first birthday party with the rest of the clan, deep into Met territory. Everyone cheered that night, even Met fans because it was the first World Series won by a NY team in a decade. Car horns were honking, kids yelling "hooray!", it was surrreal.

My father raised me right: as a Yankees fan. Yes, the post '95 Yankees have been fantastic, but I remember when the team sucked ass. And during those lean years (and there were a lot of them) I still loved the team as much as I do now. Maybe more.

In 1986, when everyone I knew became a Mets fan, I still held true to my belief that the METS SUCK.

People can hate me for being a Yankees fan, but they can never call me a frontrunner.

Good will beat evil Evil will have many wins but it the end it only takes one major win to overthrow the system. As is WWII, as was Star Wars, as was the counter culture movement, as will be the Boston Red Sox over the Yankees/Mets. We will win, we will overthrow.

I have a great shirt that I used to wear to Fenway all the time.

It's Navy and White.

On the front it says: Hey Red Sox Fans, I Have Two Words For You
On the back it says: Bill Buckner

Mets fan

I've never understood why Buckner was the goat and not Bob Stanley and Calvin Schraldi. They're the ones who blew a two run lead in the 10th inning with the Red Sox one out away. Bob Stanley gave up the tying run on a WILD PITCH with the Red Sox one out away from their World series. A wild pitch!

Even if Buckner had caught that "slow roller" he still might not have time to get Mookie out at first.

Plus, the game was already tied and the Mets would have come back anyway.

And it was only Game 6!

well ive only been to one game in my life and that was a mets game last year. it was mets verse the phillies. the whole time on the subway ride there my friend kept telling me about how bad the mets were this year even though he was a fan and how they have this thing called crazy eights where people just go crazy in the 8th inning (couldnt help but think of the warmup game being done by everyone in the stadium at the same time). well It was a very boring game, it was 1 - nothing phillies the whole time untill the 8th inning when the mets scored 8 runs in a row. It was a good time. Im gonna have to go with mets, because crazy eights cant be a coincidence.

Lil' Counsellor--

I know what you're saying...

But Bill Buckner remains a big old sore spot with Bostonians.

I remember going to a Red Sox/Yankees game at Fenway with my friend who worked for the Boston Phoenix, and his friend who worked for the Globe...they went on and on about how Buckner is probably the one player who can never set foot in FP again...of course, this was before Clemens went to the Yanks, but still...

I'm sure I've talked about this extensively before, but I'm bored to shit at work. So, here we go.

I am a Yankee fan. Born and raised in the Bronx - I know nothing else. I realize that I'm spoiled, but I remember bad days. Steve Kemp. Mel Hall. Paul Zuvella. Wayne Tolleson. Ken Phelps. I've seen George's money buy both good (David Wells) and bad (Ed Whitson, Steve Trout). I've been through it all. I honestly believe that it cannot last. But I am grateful for it while it does last. Because fortune and judgement can turn on you like that.

I have the utmost respect for Red Sox and Cubs fans. Seriously. Ask any member of the improv/red sox nation, and they'll tell you it's true. Anybody who can stay loyal through thin and thin, without much thick, is okay in my book.

I also like the Tampa Bay Rays and the Phillies. Ask me why sometimes. They're both great stories.

Meet the Mets...meet the Mets
Come on down and greet the Mets!

And I hate the Yankees. I like a bunch of their players, but I can't stand the team, Steinbrenner and the majority of their fans.
