Hey all,

I'm opening a new improv/sketch room at The Broadway Comedy Club (318 West 53rd Street.) and need help naming the new room.

It could be something witty and clever or just named after someone who has had a profound impact on the art forms we'll be performing in the space.

This new room will be open to all to hang out and get shows up at. Improv and sketch are welcome and I'd be open to other suggestions that would fit in the room.

It'll be booked and managed by myself and I have a pretty decent amount of improv and sketch experience (Second City, Annoyance, IO + Del Close trained) with a couple of thousand shows produced/performed under my belt. I hope to make the room an awesome place to perform quality shows.

We just hosted The 2008 Skit Skat Sketch Festival with much success and already have many groups booked over the Summer. We'll also be announcing an improv and sketch open mic shortly.

Looking forward to your input as this will be your room as much as it is ours.

I am,

PS If anyone is looking for a booking for their group, feel free to contact me.

(I must admit, I ask because I'm a little worried that the new room is CCL's room, and that we're going to have many more people throwing our props around backstage.)

OK,

We are not actually constructing a new, physical space at The Broadway Comedy Club.

We are initiating a new comedy movement in the city, where improvisers, sketch comedians and the like can come together and experiment/perfect their craft (or just be really funny and do some shows.)

It's also a place to come with your buddies and get drunk for cheap 7 nights a week with half priced drinks and food for performers.

Get your group in for no rental fee

See some awesome free comedy as you'll be let into all of our stand-up and improv/sketch shows for free (we have some pretty amazing regulars -Jim Gaffigan came in to work out some material last night.)

Make a whole bunch of new friends and maybe even a whole bunch of new lovers (look out!)

Not to mention establish yourself with a new comedy room which will have performances 7 nights a week!

Be funny, get drunk, make friends, make out, perform a whole bunch.

We will mostly be performing in the 80 seat venue upstairs which hosts CCL and other groups. The room is referred to as The CCl room, The Red Room (I have no idea why) and Matilda. But we will be giving it another name for our improv/sketch theater. We will also be using the 60 seat and 200 seat theaters when the need arises.

Jeff we'll try our best not to move your props while in that room, but we will also try our best to move your props when we're in the other spaces with OUR MINDS!

I look forward to performing and getting drunk with you and also to your suggestions as so far we only have "The Chuckle Hut", which no offense to Katey, but I would rather call the room "The Comedy Abortion Performance Space". (and no we're not going to use that name either.)

I love you,
Aaron Haber

Also,

We have tried to photograph the room, but it was built by vampires and does not photograph. It is also afraid that the photograph might steal its soul.

Or I don't have a photo on my computer and will try to get one up soon. You're also welcomed to come by the club (318 West 53rd between 8th and 9th) and check the room out with your own eyes, as we all know that photos can be distorted and can't be trusted.

Best,
Aaron Haber

It's a good space! I'm glad it will be put to good use! (Just hang up our wigs when you're done with them.)

I'll have to think about that name... can we name it after Gummo Marx?

OK, now we're getting somewhere.

If I ever get another car I will call it The Del Closemobile. I like The Stockroom (when you do go in there though, it's really a very nice space.)

Viola Spolin was certainly a very important figure in the history of Modern Improv. Spolin begat Sills who begat the Second City (along with David Shepard and others) who begat Del Close (who then parted ways with Del Close who begat The Improv Olympic (originally The Improv Olympics as imagined once again by David Shepard) who then handed it off to Charna Halpern who took in Del who later begat The UCB who begat The PIT who begat The Magnate. (This is how I see it, I could have some of my begating a little off.) I was mostly begat from The Second City, Improv Olympic and Annoyance in Chicago. I attribute my best begotten to Del, Mick Napier and Michael Gelman.

I'm not sure about SSW's name suggestions, but he does have the most awesome avatar ever! Modern Lovers being one of my favorite bands (they begat The Cars BTW).

Ok, keep em coming...and to the people who have emailed me and requested a show slot, I'll be in touch soon! For those who would like to get a show slot...emaill me (aaron@theworldnyc.com)

mucho love-o,
Aaron

You know, he's still alive and he was an immense influence on improv, being the director of The St. Louis Compass and one of the creators of "the kitchen rules" of improv fame.

He's now a sculptor of naked ladies.
