New PIT Classes!!

#1
Jump into The PIT this summer... and don't miss out on Ali Farahnakian's last classes until this fall. He'll be in Chicago from mid-June on to do Tony Kushner's new play, "Homebody Kabul," at The Steppenwolf Theatre.

Also, Armando Diaz will only be offering one Instant Brilliance class this session, so that will surely fill up very quickly. He will also be offering two perfomance-based classes, however. Get the lowdown on registration at www.thepit-nyc.com/classes.htm. Read all about it....

Improv 101: Intro to Improvisation - Kurt Braunohler
This class will transform you from a mild-mannered civilian into an improv artiste. Incorporating movement-based exercises, scene work and group exercises, we will explore the primary tenets of improvisation -- making you more confident, trusting and graceful on stage. No shit. The class emphasizes creating a rich environment for your scenes, committing to your decisions and your scene partner and beginning with the body as inspiration. The class will culminate in a performance with your fellow students at the PIT.
6 weeks - $250
Wednesdays 7-10pm - Begins May 21st

Intermediate Improv: Intensive Scenework Skills - Brian Berrebbi
In this class the essential scenework skills necessary for any longform will be imprinted on your brain, made second nature to you. The teaching style is based on simple, practical tools that will make you a better improviser immediately. Nothing abstract, nothing arcane, no bullshit. The de-mystifying approach will allow you to be the improviser you want to be, producing immediate results that will stay with you and prepare you for advanced longforms. Prerequisite: Intro to Improv or equivalent.

Tuesdays 7-10pm - Begins May 20th

6 weeks - $250
Sundays 12-3pm - Begins May 4th

Harold Camp: Mastering the Harold - Armando Diaz
All longforms are based on the original longform, Harold, created by the late Del Close in Chicago. But it takes more than just knowing the structure to successfully master the Harold. This class will give you new insight into this seminal form, with special emphasis on the Chicago-style Harold. Prerequisite: Two longform improv classes.
6 weeks - $250
Saturdays 12-3pm - Begins May 3rd

Level 5: Improv Maga - Ali Farahnakian
This class will be taught with a martial arts point of view (i.e., It is easier for me to train you to defend against a "NO" or a question than it is for me to train you to say "YES, and..." and ask no questions. This class will focus on why scenes work and don't work, focusing on techniques that will push you to have more funny, interesting scenes. This class will concentrate on process NOT product. Be patient. Class may organically drift towards longform. Maga is Hebrew for battle. Title drawn from KRAV MAGA, Israeli military self-defense. There will be 45 minutes of martial arts to open the classes, so bring your workout gear and be ready to sweat. Prerequisite: Three improv classes.
6 weeks - $250
Tuesdays 7-10pm - Begins Apr 29th

Instant Brilliance - Armando Diaz
This class is designed to turn improvisers into performers. Students will work individual improv muscles and participate in exercises that challenge and build confidence. After this class you should fear nothing. Prerequisite: Harold Camp or equivalent.
6 weeks - $250

Performance Workshop: Level 1 - Armando Diaz
The only way to really get better as a performer is to perform! No matter how many classes you take no class fully replaces the benefits of stage time. Level 1 Performance Workshop will provide students the opportunity to polish their on-stage skills while performing a variety of longform improv in front of an audience. Along with the regular three-hour class, students will perform every other Thursday night in a live show at The PIT. After each performance, the class will receive comprehensive notes by their instructor. Prerequisite: Instant Brilliance or equivalent (UCB Level 3, etc.)

I forgot to mention, if you're already a PIT student and you refer a new PIT student (and they tell us) you'll get $25 off a PIT class.

Also, if two or more new students register for Intro to Improv, we'll give them each that discount as well.

See you at The PIT,
Brian

The Pack seal of approval!! It doesn't get any better than that...

Remember, Ali's classes start next week since he'll be leaving in June to go to Chicago to appear in Tony Kushner's "Homebody Kabul."

Hey Kiddos... Ali's classes start next week and we still have some spots available. Also, Armando's classes begin the week after and are filling up. But really what I want to tell you is about this class:

Improvising Shakespeare Workshop
Saturday May 10th, 3-6pm & Sunday May 11th 3-6pm
Plus there will be a class performance at the PIT Sunday May 11th at 8pm
Cost $100 a person

What is it?
Improvising Shakespeare
- Improvising in the style of Shakespeare, discovering the intensity of the form, using it to propel, heighten, and enrich your other work.

Shakespeare scenes are some of the easiest and most liberating scenes you will ever do on stage. In this workshop, any lingering fear of ol' Willy the Shake will be banished completely and forever, like some contumelious, pusillanimous, whey-faced ballcock. You will learn the true and proper ways to use "Thee, Thou, and Thy" and will quickly saunter about able to spout off in Elizabethan English on any subject. And you'll want to. We'll cover plot devices, basic Shakespeare scene/story structure, character names and types, methods, approaches, and some just plain cheap hacky tricks. Shakespeare is about passion - his characters FEEL things. The tools he provides you are some of the best ever devised: the aside, the soliloquy, the mystical fairies and sprites whose capricious wills are visited upon poor hapless mortals. In what other scene can you just pause and just tell the audience something? Ah, the sweet, sweet power! You will, and I mean you will, master all the ingredients necessary to create a fully improvised Shakespeare scene. And there's a hand out. Audiences love Shakespeare and so will you, after this most enlightening of workshops.

Who's teaching this:
Dave Cox:
An amphibian, Dave is fond of pie. Originally from Illinois, the improv heart of the Midwest, he attended the University of Houston, worked widely with The Comedy Workshop, ComedySportz, and other Texas clubs, eventually trekking to Los Angeles to study and work with the Groundlings, Improv Olympic, bang! Improv Theater, ACME Comedy Theater and whoever else would have him. Dave is a professional, award winning magician, a writer for Paramount Studios and VH-1, a busy audition coach, and a big time game show winner. His work includes films, television, commercials, radio, stand up comedy, poetry slams, and live theater, performed in theaters, comedy clubs, coffee houses, parks, street corners, and from within three dimensional interactive sculptures. He has taught improvisation, character, magic, Shakespeare (both straight and improvisational), and dialects to hundreds of actors, actresses, college and high school students in the Southland for, among others, Improv Olympic, UCLA, the Empty Stage Theater, and ACME Comedy Theater, and taught around the country at festivals like the Big Stinkin' Improv Festival. Last year he toured both here and abroad (if, by abroad you mean Canada (and let me tell you about a broad in Canada...)) for 32 weeks with "Sound and Fury" (www.soundandfury.org) bringing fine Fakesperean comedy to all the good boys and girls. He directs Sirius Theater's Improvisational Shakespeare Company "The Green Show", was a founding member of the Broadway-style musical improv group "Opening Night: The Improvised Musical!" and currently performs weekly in Hollywood with the award winning Improv Shakespeare group "The Spontaneous Shakespeare Company" and the 1940's Improvised Radio Show "Liquid Radio Players" (www.liquidradioplayers.com), is a member of the Bravo Company at the ACME Comedy Theater, and recently replaced Wil Wheaton as the host of the weekly show "Arena" on the G4 network. Del Close liked him, and so will you. He is apparently serious about the pie thing.
