Game of Scene: Fundamentals
Finding the Game of the Scene and playing it are critical skills for performing comedy improvisation. This workshop will break down the Game of the Scene into a set of practical tools that any improvisor can learn to execute. We will be using the UCB’s new Comedy Improvisation Manual as our text book.
This should probably not be your first improv class. This is a class for improv students who have completed at least one or two introductory classes in improv.

The Teacher
Kevin MullaneyKevin Mullaney has taught improvisation for 17 years, first for iO Theater, then for the UCB Theatre in New York and now for the newly formed Under the Gun Theater in Chicago. He is the Artistic Director of Under the Gun Theater and the Chicago Improv Festival, the host of the IRC Improv Podcast and the webmaster of the Improv Resource Center. He is the former Artistic Director of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in New York, where he also served as the chief administrator of their training program. He directed numerous improv shows for the UCB Theater including “Tracers”, “Retraced”, “Individually Wrapped”, and “The Swarm in Slow Waltz Around Rage Mountain”. He is the creator of Cage-Match and the Annual 3 on 3 Tournament at UCB. He is also an actor who has appeared in shows by Chemically Imbalanced Comedy, WildClaw, Will Act For Food and Caffeine Theatre. He can be seen performing Mullaney Chain, an improv show that closes Hump Night.

- Efficiently establish the base reality of the scene.
- Play grounded characters who behave at the top of their intelligence.
- Identify the first unusual thing and frame it for your scene partner.
- Apply “If this, then what” logic to the first unusual thing to establish the Game of the Scene.
- Justify the first unusual thing without destroying what is weird and fun about it.
- Find the “rest” in the game and play games in ways which surprise you and your scene partner.
