Hello All,

I am planning to move from NJ to Chicago in November. Can anyone provide info on rentals in/around Chicago? I have two dogs, and would prefer to live as close to the city as possible for under $1000 a month. If anyone is a realtor or knows anyone who is, I would love to talk to them.

If anyone has any contacts in the Information Technology field I have about a decade worth of software support experience. I've just started sending resumes to Illinios based employers.

Any help would be appreciated. You can post to this thread or e-mail me at filledwithdoubt@yahoo.com

Hi, Diana. I'm afraid I don't have any specific information for you but I can assure you, even though Chicago rents have gone up considerably since I moved away in 1996, you can definitely find a nice place to live in the city for less than $1000. Possibly a lot less.

A good source for finding apartments and jobs is chicagoreader.com. You can do a search by area/zip code. Apartment People is also a good source and they are free. The best way to find an apartment is to walk/drive around. The renter's market is great for people who need an apartment, so there is a lot available and the prices have gone down. This is mainly due to the fact that interest rates were so cheap so a bunch of people said "fuck it" to renting and started buying places. You shouldn't have any problems finding places that will allow dogs, but some places definitely do not allow it.
I've lived here my whole life, so if you have any more questions, just ask.

I've found all of my chicago apartments through The Apartment People. They're totally free, although you do need to provide both a security deposit AND the first month's rent up front. They are so friendly and will use their huge database of apartments for rent to quickly narrow down which ones they will drive you to. They'll even spend several days with you until you find the perfect place.

chicago is very spread out with great neighborhoods breaking it up to make it feel smaller and more community-like. you should have no problem finding an area you'll love. and also as someone said, since so few people are renting right now (more people are buying or staying put), you can bargain more. i had my landlord hold my apartment for an extra month because she was desperate. its crazy how many places aren't being rented right now.

good luck!
