Moving in Queens

I am interested in hiring movers. The old movers thread is gone, so I just wanted to ask opinions: who is the best for moving WITHIN Queens? Does it matter if the company is located in Manhattan?

Seaman's say that they will move me but it's 105 an hour, with a 4 hour minimum. I'm just moving up the street, so I would like to find a cheaper service. But IS there a cheaper service? I'm still waiting for more quotes, but if I end up paying $400 to move ten blocks, I will be very upset with you, IRC.

Love,
Erin

What day are you moving? We could get a posse together and do it for free. Unless you're including your expansive collection of Ming Dynasty crystal, then you'll need pros.

The cheapest place I have found is Delight, which charges $87/hr and has no hour minimum, although they tack on an hour for travel. They would send 3 movers, and they will give us two free wardrobe boxes. I don't anticipate a long move, as we have very few large items.

Most places have a four hour minimum plus an hour for travel, and charge more per hour. But most other places also give more free boxes! Wheee!!!!

I still don't know what I want to do but I have to make up my mind fast because we're moving on Sunday. Delight has a truck available at 11am, which is perfect because then we can be finished with the move by dinner time, and run into the city in time for the 9:30 ASSSCAT*!!!

But still it's expensive. Help me out, homies. We're talking third-floor walk-up to a fourth-floor walk-up. I seriously want to hire some monkeys to do it for me. I wouldn't want to subject my peeps to that kind of back trauma. You know, unless you guys LOOOOOVE disassembling and reassembling a futon.

*just kidding.

I found a place that charges 60 an hour. Can you believe it?! I don't...

We'll see, IRC. I might call upon you yet.

People who have used movers:

What is the time difference if they send two guys or three?

He said three originally but when I just talked to him now he said two. I was just wondering if he's trying to rip me off by sending less guys so it will take longer.

i have only used movers once. but there were three guys. the reason why i think three is a sound number is one guy can be downstairs unloading the van. and basically watching it too. otherwise, you will have to be watching the van.

then again, since there are two of you right? then maybe it won't make a big difference. but it would suck if only one of you was there because you couldn't tell them where to put things or you'd risk haven't your crap stolen.

granted, hopefully it would be insured but still, i'd rather it just not be an issue and be safe.

It's 60 bucks an hour. The next cheapest was 85. I basically went with the cheaper, shadier guy, rather than the super nice, super cheerful girl who kept saying how they operate on referrals and how safe and fast they are.

I'll let you know if frugality wins out over legitimacy!

i tried that once and ended up spending over $400 to move 10 minutes away. i was quoted $70/hr and was told that it would probably take 2 hours. the day of the move they were late, tacked on all these fees (a charge for stairs! charge for getting stuck in traffic!), and damaged my furnature. i paid them because they were scary russian mafia looking guys and i didn't want my move to end with me dead in my new room. they also left me with no receipt so that i couldn't complain (they faked leaving the receipt on my counter. one guy pretended to set it down while the other talked to me and when i went to get it to call the bbb is wasn't there).

don't do shady, erin, it might bite you in the end.

You are too late! I gave them a deposit. They were referred to me by HomeBulletin.net.

But I now know some things to look out for. Any other tips?

Oh and I asked when I was talking to him and he said they don't charge for stairs.

And there is usually no traffic in my neighborhood (knock on wood). I don't think it will take too long but I have to keep an eye on them because I don't want them to steal any of Katie's stuff!

I probably used the same russian mafia guys when I moved. They impressed upon me of buying "insurance" for an extra $50, and then insisted I "tip" them $20 apiece afterwards.

I have no problem tipping them, but I would LOVE a receipt. If they try to trick me I will call my contact "Mike" and hassle him until he relents.

For I, you see, am relentless.
