Union Square is a crapshoot - and often depends on the movie.
I believe Kevin, Tanouye, and I once were the bad audience members at the midnight showing of I, Robot.

Yes, we went to the midnight showing of I, Robot.

I watched Black Hawk Down with a 3 year old. Not cool. This was, of course, at the AMC 25. I think all of this is hit or miss but you can tell a lot by the movie you're going to see. I've had good luck at the Loews Lincoln Square and Kips Bay.

I saw Jackie Brown in a movie theater in Brooklyn. 10 guidos came together with glass beer bottles they kept throwing on the ground and wouldnt shutup in a dialogue driven Tarantino movie. So annoying. One kept yelling at all the others about how long it was and why it sucked so bad even though De Niro was in it. They basically saw the poster and thought it was a De Niro movie.

Going to see Spiderman 2, I went to that Battery Park theater on opening night. It was jammed up and I thought i was gonna be screwed. The first preview was for "Anacondas". Some dude yells out "Yo, where Jennifer Lopez at? The theater thought he was hysterical and lost it laughing and I thought i was in big trouble for the rest of this one. But hoodlums apparently shutup for Spiderman.

Babies usually make audience appearances at the worst possible movies they should be at. Like loud horror movies.

The bottom line is that demographic, time, subject matter all play into your theatergoing experience. I dont know any theater that sucks ALL the time.
I'd recommend going at 2:30pm on a Monday or a midnight on the third Wednesday since the release date for a movie. Other than that, these days we have no choice but to suck it up and share with dooshes.

Just bring a gun in case anyone gets out of line.

The Theater near me and Terry Jinn is pretty bad too. Its the kind of theater where you will go to a midnight showing of a rated R movie on a weeknight, and will see young couples bringing along there babies and 5 year old children (who have school the next day?). You would think I was complaining about the children but the children never seem to be the problem, its their parents who are constantly yelling at them for sitting in their seat wrong. Its also the way in which they tell them this stuff which bothers me. I dont like parents who loudly tell their toddlers to "SHUT THE FUCK UP" or "IM GONNA FUCKING HIT YOU IF YOU DONT STAY STILL". (edit: but quietly saying this is definitely ok)

Nobody at this theater ever turns off their cell phone, nor will they refuse to answer any incoming calls. They talk on the phone for as long as they feel like.

Also, while the signs say "smoking in the theater is prohibited", I cant tell you how many times I have smelt or seen someone with a lit cigerette. Hey im a pack a day smoker, but at least im considerate not to light up in a packed theater. (Although I have smoked in theaters before, but only with permission from friends who work there and it was always during private screenings)

I also have had the people sitting next to me bring in bottles of hard liquor, which fucking reeked.

Wow, I've never had any problems like these. I know people talk and answer cellphones but it really doesn't bother me too much. Usually I'm the guy with the beer/liquor and I may make a comment or two.

My favorite movie where there was a baby in the audience was the Dawn of the Dead remake... let me tell you that baby was annoying for sure, but once the baby appeared on the film and was promply shot everone in the whole theatre turned around and started lauging at the couple, then they left.

It was sweet.

I see a lot of movies at the AMC 25 and the Ewalk- they're pretty much the only conveniently located theaters that have stadium seating (a necessity on weekends for short movie enthusiasts like me). I find it's hit-or-miss there. But when it's bad, it's bad.

Kaufman Astoria and those Times Square theaters are nothig compared to the Magic Johnson Theater in Harlem.
