[Miami, FL] Just The Funny hitting the road...

#1
After a lot of people nudging us to do it, Just The Funny is finally hitting the road and doing some touring. We're starting small (just the two of us, Carlos Rivera and David Christopher) and are performing with some great groups here in Florida. Hopefully, we will finally travel to some festivals out of the state this spring!

Any advice from travelling groups, especially duos, would be great. BTW, thanks to Joe Bill for giving us some great stuff to work with from The Scramble, as our longform duo show, DUOCITY, has a lot of elements from it.

----------------------

Here's some info on what we're doing:

Orlando

On Friday, September 16 at 8:00 pm Carlos Rivera and I will join our good friends at SAK Comedy Lab for a guest spot in their Duel of Fools show!

For more information on SAK Comedy Lab go to: http://www.sak.com/

Jacksonville

Just The Funny is then sending our two-man show DUOCITY, to the Jacksonville Laugh Fest this weekend for a show at 7:00 pm on Saturday, September 17. I will also be teaching a longform workshop there on Saturday at 4:00 pm.

So far the fest looks awesome and Improv Jacksonville have been wonderful organizers. They even got some great press on TV: http://www.firstcoastnews.com/links/news-article.aspx?storyid=44211

Jupiter

Then on Friday, September 23 at 8:00 pm, we will be performing DUOCITY at Atlantic Arts Academy with our friends Gated Community for their Hurricane Katrina Benfit.

About DUOCITY

DUOCITY takes on issues and input from the audience to create multiple scenes, locations and characters in what can be best described as an interactive, improvised comedic play. The show showcases the two unique personalities and styles of both actors, with David Christopher’s dry, absurd and sometimes dramatic approach, opposite Carlos Rivera’s quirky left-field wit. DUOCITY will feature intelligent and edgy humor, created from characters and situations morphing reality with the absurd.

We've got more dates and festivals in Florida coming soon. I'll keep you updated. Wish us luck, and again any advice would really help.

Just want to give a great big shout out to our gracious hosts this past weekend. Carlos and I had a blast!

SAK Comedy Lab
Thanks to Richard, Keith and Dave Russell, for taking us in and letting us play on your stage. What a great show, we had a great time in both Duel of Fools, and Slice of Life. Letting Carlos and I close the show was awesome. Thanks to your wonderful and talented cast too. The hackey sack warm-up was fun, even if we suck at it. We hope to come back up and play again soon.

Improv Jacksonville
Thanks to Scott, Aimee, JR, Robert, John, and especially Gary Blevins, these guys are awesome. Thank you so much for letting us be a part of your first festival, what a wonderful time. Thanks for having me teach the longform workshop, it was awesome, and I wish we had more time. Thanks for also letting us perform DUOCITY, and play in Gymprov. Congrats on your new venue, and all the best with the upcoming move. Longform in Jacksonville lives! Great cast, and so many of you too, thanks to all. We had a great time with you all and hope to see you up there and down here again.

Folks, if you are ever in these two great Florida cities check out both SAK Comedy Lab and Improv Jacksonville. We hope to come back up, and see you both down here at The 2006 Miami Improv Festival!

I'd like to thank the hospitality of JTF.

Last night we (actually THEY) attended JTF's Bad Mamma Jamma and had a lot of fun...and so did the audience.

After a lead-in of their Survivor Improv, THEY and JTF took the stage for a 1 hour show that became 1 hour and 45 minutes. Performing longform that audiences in this market sometimes have difficulty with for 30 minutes, the two troupes came together and kept the audience engaged for over an hour on the first piece alone. The free-form was awesome and fun and everyone really enjoyed one-another.

Thanks a lot for inviting us and for sharing the experience with us.

It was nice to finally be on the stage with you David, and Alex...and Carlos...and Maha...and LD - my Picasso friend.

I hope to see Duocity soon.

Take care,

Todd Rice

Once again Carlos and I have hit the road with DUOCITY, this time with Alex Perdomo, and I must say we had a great time, although I think we are going to lay off on the long drives for at least a couple of weeks.

Time for the shout out:

Gated Community
Thank you all so much for being gracious hosts and allowing us into your home. We had a great time doing DUOCITY, this time in a smaller 25 minute set. Your show, the Hurricane Katrina Benefit was great fun and impressive. Best of all it was great getting out with the group to Quaterdeck (sports bar) afterward for some brews and food. Looking forward to seeing you guys down here at Just The Funny and for The 2006 Miami Improv Festival. Special thanks to Frank Licari, Travis Thomas and especially Jesse Furman for setting us up.

When in Jupiter, FL check these guys out!

Well another weekend down, another DUOCITY show and longform workshop performed and taught. Carlos and I once again hit the road, this time with troupe member Maxx Maulion, and a great time was had by all.

Gainesville Improv Festival
A huge thanks to Tom O'Donnell and Skyler Stone for taking such good care of us. You guys did a stellar job, and at your first festival too! Way to break your cherry! Much props to Theatre Strike Force and our very good friends, Mod 27, for the awesome shows in our block, it was an honor to be in that block with you both.

GIF was a great experience, and we had our best show ever with DUOCITY, in what was a great block to be in already, with TSF and Mod 27. The audience was huge and great, and Carlos and I responded with what was just one of those shows where everything went right. We've done well with DUOCITY, but it just keeps getting better. The only lowlight, was that this was the one show I did not videotape... go figure.

Maxx, great job, and the next time we travel, you need to come along. This guy is downright hilarious. If you ever meet Maxx ask him to show you "The Brain" and "The Bat Wing." Once you see them you will never be the same.

The workshop was great too. Had a great group of students and we went over a lot, and went long too. Gainesville has a lot to be proud about.

All in all a great trip, and the love affair with our buddies Mod 27 continues!!!

Get to Gainesville, and get to this festival next year!

Touching base as Carlos and I are ready to hit the road again representing Just The Funny, with our duo sho DUOCITY at the Dirty South Improv Festival.

We last performed DUOCITY at The 2006 Miami Improv Festival, and the show was one of our best yet, with an awesome dramatic beginning, and touching comedic ending. I want to thank Jesse Parent, Mark Sutton and Tom O'Donnell for the support and great feedback on the show at MIF.

DSIF will mark the first touring date for Just The Funny in 2006, with hopefully much more to come for the year!

Updates coming soon!

Carlos and I are at it again, and have just got back from North Carolina with the Just The Funny show DUOCITY. Joining us on the trip was none other than Maxx Maulion, who is quickly becoming a festival regular.

Dirty South Improv Festival
A big thanks to Zach Ward and the crew at DSIF. Carlos, Maxx and I had a great time! Carlos and Maxx took advantage of all the festivities, as I was sick as a dog for most of the trip. Eventhough I was getting over a fever, which broke about an hour before the show, and was coughing all day, Carlos and I pulled off a solid-ass show that was funny, dramatic and technically sound, for what we are trying to do with DUOCITY. This show is really hitting its stride, and we are looking forward to taking it to the next level.

The rest of the weekend I was pretty much bedridden and visiting family in the area. Thankfully, Carlos and Maxx took workshops, went to panels, and watched a boatload of shows. It was really cool to have family at the show, and they really enjoyed it.

I think we will be holding off on the really long drives for a while, but be on the lookout for us a little closer to home.
