Looking to Form a New Practice / Performance Group (or Join an existing one)

Should IRC create a forum for people looking to (join / move about) practice teams?

This is an extension of the threads I created under plugs
in so far as that I am looking to diversify my improv experience.

I am no longer affiliated with my old team.
That phase has come and gone.

Now is the time for me to try on some new shoes.
I'll work with most anyone, I think
as there is something to be learned from eveyone.

I will ultimately attempt to create a new "chosen" team.
but don't get me wrong, i don't want to rock your boat.
If you've got something going, keep it that way. Great!
I would just be honored to take part.

If you know anyone looking to do the same.
Please let me know. I greatly appreciate any help in this regard.

Peace,

Drew Nelson

Re: your poll, Drew:

Maybe not a forum, but a sticky thread might be nice (that advises readers to note the date the post was made).

Hey Ben,

If it's a sticky thread, then I think it should be put on top of the improvasation forum. That way every improviser can use it, no matter what region of the country they're located at.

Hey Drew, In Philly, we have an improv incubater team going on, in hopes that one day they will perform together as one. In it, people can come & go as they wish. They meet once a week & sometimes it's also a potluck dinner, in which people also bring various different things to munch on. I was thinking that maybe you might want to start in NYC, an improv incubater team like the one in Philly.

yea, i'm looking as weel

Yes! I'm looking to join a team as well. With 8 years improv experience under my belt I'd definitely be interested in joining a troupe - especially if it means I don't have to pay through the nose for more classes.

Keep me up to date and let me know when I can audition.

Not too sure.

I was wondering about the same thing.

Personally I'd like to see it as a forum right next to the "Find a Coach" forum. Individual threads for each potential group would be easier to track than replys about different groups all jumbled into one sticky thread.

BTW - I am looking for a group so if anyone needs another warm body speak up.

We could have an entire website devoted to airing intragroup personal issues. "Real World Improv"

Oh, and I need a practice group too. [Just finished 501.]

*Note: It looks like the information below may prove useless to the people who've decided to meet up and improvise. But I still think my advice would be valuable to an up and coming improv student looking to start a practice group.

A successful way to start a practice from is to go to student shows, shows where other independent improvisers would be and talk to the players you like directly. Most students, if they haven't already started practice groups with classmates, would love to work out outside of class but lack the initiative to make it happen. But if you tell a typical improv student about a practice and where to show up, you'll have yourself a group.
Further, for someone who's looking to put together handpicked team, why leave it open to a message board only to have to weed people out later? It saves aggravation and social unpleasantries to be in touch with the people whose work you enjoy and go from there. You may have more people than you need, you may have fewer, but it's a better start than the equivalent of leaving a flyer on a telephone pole.

I'm in two groups right now, but I would love to keep doing practices with new folks. I finished 501 at the UCB a couple of months ago and I've been performing with my groups all around Manhattan. Contact info is in my signature, so keep me posted.
