I moved out here one year ago from NYC, and I have some thoughts I'd like to share about LA vs NYC
First, I love it here. Most actors who move here form NYC tend not to. The reasons they have are fair and I"ll try to list the ones I remember.
Superficial 'Fake' actors
no seasons
traffic
smog
no cool bars(2am close)
there are more and I'm sure some people will post what they are.
My take on that list...
"Too many lame superficial actors"
I lived in NYC for 6 years. There are some great actors there, some of the best. There are more lame superficial ones. There's also a lot of business men. I hate business men. There's also a lot of just mad angry people, I don't like them either. I'll take the occasional superficial actor over a business man and an asshole any day. I don't have to hang with them. In NYC I was forced to, in subways and on crowded streets.
"no seasons"
I grew up in Minnesota. I got it. It's cold in the winter and hot in the summer and in the middle of the two nature puts on a show for free. Got it James Taylor, no thanks. Living thru the snow and humidity to take a pretty picture of trees leaves dying ain't worth it, for me.
"traffic"
I like to drive. Of course I hate bumper to bumper traffic. But more than that I hate standing in a sea people underground in a tube. In my car I can smoke, make a phone call and sing out loud to my music. Now, you can do all those things on a subway but you gotta be above ground to call, and singing and smoking make the other people mad and might score you a ticket.
Also, if you take the time in this city you can find some pretty cool short cuts running north and south. Having a car also opens up the door for impromptu road trips. this is one of the best things in life. If you haven't, do it.
smog
This one is unfair for me, I'm a smoker. I'm smoging myself all day thus my sense of smell is weak...but I did smoke in NYC and could still smell the rank sent of trash heaped on the corner, not so much in the winter, but I refer you to 'the seasons' paragraph. It also makes for wonderful sunsets.
no cool bars
this is just not true. there's not as many bars but again if you take some time to find the joint, you will. A 4am bar time has done only three things for me, giving me two more hours to spend more money, two more hours to get really drunk, and two more hours to convince myself that that girl is cute.
Than again, Sara Conor said 'No fate but what you make'. Overall my NYC experience is exactly what I made of it. And my opinion is formed from that experience. I moved out there at 19 went through two serious relationships, and did a lot of comedy. It made me stronger in some ways and weaker in others. I left it on a bad note and in bad shape mentally.
I can't deny NYC is a beautiful city. The culture runs rich and deep (as deep as America gets). The Architecture is epic, detailed, and vast. The live theater and overall Art is unmatched. And the pizza, oh lord the pizza.
However, I was looking for something completely different, a place to start over. I found it here. LA gave me the beach. It gave me late spring early summer everyday. Pilot season, palm trees, great weed, commercial auditions and it slowed me down. I needed that.
so for me, CaptDope, LA wins.
how bout you, also if you've moved from LA to NYC what was that like???
