LA vs NYC

I moved out here one year ago from NYC, and I have some thoughts I'd like to share about LA vs NYC
First, I love it here. Most actors who move here form NYC tend not to. The reasons they have are fair and I"ll try to list the ones I remember.
Superficial 'Fake' actors
no seasons
traffic
smog
no cool bars(2am close)
there are more and I'm sure some people will post what they are.

My take on that list...

"Too many lame superficial actors"
I lived in NYC for 6 years. There are some great actors there, some of the best. There are more lame superficial ones. There's also a lot of business men. I hate business men. There's also a lot of just mad angry people, I don't like them either. I'll take the occasional superficial actor over a business man and an asshole any day. I don't have to hang with them. In NYC I was forced to, in subways and on crowded streets.

"no seasons"
I grew up in Minnesota. I got it. It's cold in the winter and hot in the summer and in the middle of the two nature puts on a show for free. Got it James Taylor, no thanks. Living thru the snow and humidity to take a pretty picture of trees leaves dying ain't worth it, for me.

"traffic"
I like to drive. Of course I hate bumper to bumper traffic. But more than that I hate standing in a sea people underground in a tube. In my car I can smoke, make a phone call and sing out loud to my music. Now, you can do all those things on a subway but you gotta be above ground to call, and singing and smoking make the other people mad and might score you a ticket.
Also, if you take the time in this city you can find some pretty cool short cuts running north and south. Having a car also opens up the door for impromptu road trips. this is one of the best things in life. If you haven't, do it.

smog
This one is unfair for me, I'm a smoker. I'm smoging myself all day thus my sense of smell is weak...but I did smoke in NYC and could still smell the rank sent of trash heaped on the corner, not so much in the winter, but I refer you to 'the seasons' paragraph. It also makes for wonderful sunsets.

no cool bars
this is just not true. there's not as many bars but again if you take some time to find the joint, you will. A 4am bar time has done only three things for me, giving me two more hours to spend more money, two more hours to get really drunk, and two more hours to convince myself that that girl is cute.

Than again, Sara Conor said 'No fate but what you make'. Overall my NYC experience is exactly what I made of it. And my opinion is formed from that experience. I moved out there at 19 went through two serious relationships, and did a lot of comedy. It made me stronger in some ways and weaker in others. I left it on a bad note and in bad shape mentally.
I can't deny NYC is a beautiful city. The culture runs rich and deep (as deep as America gets). The Architecture is epic, detailed, and vast. The live theater and overall Art is unmatched. And the pizza, oh lord the pizza.

However, I was looking for something completely different, a place to start over. I found it here. LA gave me the beach. It gave me late spring early summer everyday. Pilot season, palm trees, great weed, commercial auditions and it slowed me down. I needed that.
so for me, CaptDope, LA wins.

how bout you, also if you've moved from LA to NYC what was that like???

Colt,

I moved from NC to LA, straight. I HAVE been to NYC though and it wasn't for me.

I felt that the math was pretty simple: Poor and warm versus Poor and cold. At least here, I might have a postage sized lawn to go with my BS apartment but it would be better than the rap trap, overpriced, railroad apt. I would have in NYC. Mountains and ocean are closer as well.

Plus, the arty-art scene where everyone is too cool for school makes my inner redneck gag. I have complaints about LA too in that vein but the pretension level is way the fuck down compared to NYC.

You made the right choice.

PS: Any NYC'ers who read this and want to rant at me and tell me how wrong I am, please don't bother. I'm a country boy raised by a father from the South Side of Chicago and a mother from Ottawa, Illinois. I'm confused enough of as it is and would probably explode my own head trying to figure out whether to put "y'all" or "youse guys" at the end of my "fuck you". ;)

BOC out.

I was at NYU for a cup of coffee

Pros:
lots of cool kitschy shops for music and movies, most probably illegal imports of some kind. Found a lot of coll music stores with classic rock imports
Broadway, there's nothing quite like it
public transit 24-7 where you can get to everything
small farmers markets
east coast mentality. You can eat meat and talk sports, the town's not all about "the biz"

cons
I like grocery stores and strip malls
I like driving
In the summer, there's a lingering stench like it needs a strong breeze that you can never seem to get

then again, I happen to like the Valley, but not a lot of my compadres do. It's hard to find a good dive bar where you can just talk in hollywood.

word. I used to work at Kims and TLA in NYC. I miss those places. but I have found my underground video needs can be served on the internet. I just got my copy of Suicide Club in the mail! you seen it. it's like the coolest.

This ongoing debate of NYC vs L.A. has got to STOP! I mean do we have to have this argument a 1000 times? Its so cliche.

I have lived in Queens with a car. I now live 20 minutes outside NYC in Jersey. I don't need to move to L.A. to drive around. I realize most people an NYC don't do this. Hell if you want a road trip...rent a car. You can rent a car anytime. Hell I like being able to walk out of my apartment and not having to drive to Manhattan or go shopping. You have to do this in L.A. Does that mean NYC is better? NO!

You like having a lawn. Well there is 3000 miles of lawns between NY and L.A. There is cheaper housing just about everywhere else in the country. In AZ you could rent a house for $600. Can't do that in NY or L.A.

Its what you make of it. NYC is my town. Nothing wrong with L.A. Ill probably move there at some point if I can get a career going.

I guess I wasn't try to start an argument. I was up late had some thoughts about my last year here and wanted to share them with my coummunity message board. I wanted see what others thought/ felt. I'm sorry it's cliche to you. I'm very aware it's what you make of it. I said so in my post.
Turn the dick down a notch

another thing

you know what else erks me about this dork Jazz'comedian'.
He didn't have to post.
He could of looked at this and ignored it.
but he couldn't, he had to chime in with his negative 'I've heard this conversation before therefore you guys shouldn't talk about it' argument.
that's straight up retarded.
dudes a joke

Now, now, now, Capt. Dope. Let us not resort to name calling. What does that ever accomplish? I mean, apparently I was not clear enough in the post script of my first response.

Yes, he didn't have to reply but he has a right to his opinion.

BTW: I think it's a NYC/LA discussion because we are actors/writers/filmmakers for the most part on this board. I totally agree with you that there are 3000 miles of lawn btwn here and there but unfortunately you must (for the most part) live either in NYC or LA to do what we want to do.

Am i right? If we wanted JUST improv, we would all live in Chicago. Hell, Johnny Depp lives in Paris. When my career is sufficient, I'm going to live on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill. Great Music Scene, Great Improv Scene (DSI) and an endless supply of 18-24 year old co-eds.

And in NC, $600 would be the MORGATGE on my 3 bedroom house.

I've been to Jersey as well. Not much of an argument, I'm afraid.

Can't we all just get along?

your right. sorry I called that guy a dork.

But I do kinda feel like if your opinion is 'stop talking about it' then thats lame. and that's my opinion.
Jazz has every right to roll up and tell us our disscussion is cliche. And I have every right to get mad.

but I shouldn't of called him a dork.

I'm sticking with the 'joke' thing though, the dudes a joke.

fair enough.

It's a small community though and I find that creative people have long memories.

Better to agree to disagree.

See you on Sunday. So looking forward to AV Club.

BOC out.

Personally, I just like the idea of Colton happy in LA, whether or not it would be right for me. Isn't it nice to hear someone's happy with their new digs?

Here's my deal: I love New York. I haven't gotten sick of it yet...or at least not sick enough that I can't solve the problem by getting out of town for a week or even a day. Hell, if I had a place in Fire Island and a car to get out of town easily, I could live here forever and not get too restless.

I never liked the idea of LA that much, but I have to say, I'm pretty happy with it when I visit. I'm not sure if I'd like living there that much, but it's a great place to visit. I love being near the beach, the thought of playing volleyball or surfing whenever I got the chance, having a car with whatever you might need thrown in the trunk instead of trying to carry a shoulder bag with everything you need for the day in it. I would really miss walking aimlessly around the city—one of the main reasons I love New York over most other American cities. (When I was in LA last, I went for a walk and was heckled by people in passing cars.) I don't like the strip mall sprawl of LA, but it's not bad when you have a cold Diet Coke, a kickass burger wrapped neatly for driving, and your tunes blasting while warm, flower-scented air blows through your hair.

I always figure I'll end up in LA at some point...no need to move there until it invites me. Then I'll play it by ear.

Had a beer with Colton 3 days after his One Year Los Angelersary (I coined it, but you're welcome to it).
I grew up in New York. I love it deeply, it shaped who I am. But you stay anywhere for 30 years and you start to feel like George Bailey. So you go to LA. Yes, there are "miles of lawn between LA and NYC." But that's moot because there is not miles of soundstages and casting studios, and none of us are on this board because we're trying to make a career in landscaping.
Yesterday, LA was getting to me, so the wife and I went to Angeles National Forest. It was 45 minutes away, and I stuck my head under a waterfall. And you know what else is awesome? This year, Colton and I tested against Jaleel White for a pilot. Yes. Colton, John and Urkel. And NONE of us got it. Suck it, New York.

If you're going to talk about LA, why don't you talk about helping to take care of CA against the massive influx of people and all the damage it does (and obviously has done) to its beauty. As a native Californian I'm fine with everybody thinking that LA is what CA is, and not liking it, just to keep them from coming. No offense but it gets pretty tiresome having to hear about people who have lived in the state for a year try to say "what California is". Present sensitive company excluded of course.

But you should be aware of that. And if you live here, respect it and try to contribute to a consciousness of preservation.

It's not just about your acting career.
