What do I do?

Last year I used Oz Moving and was very pleased. The quote they gave me over the phone was actually MORE than they charged curbside due to light traffic and a great crew on the day I moved. No shannigans. They were recommended to me by my attorney (who handled my closing) who had used them himself, and had recommended them to several other clients.

Oz - 318 E 78th Street. 212-452-6683

Jen MacNeil and I used Movers Not Shakers when we moved in December. They were great! On time, reasonably priced, and very nice! We moved the day after the "blizzard" in December and they found our neighbor, dug out her car and moved it so they could park in front of our house. They helped me finish packing (I had run out of boxes). They made an extra stop to pick up a couch a friend was giving us. They only charged us extra for the second, unplanned, stop, and only $60... I will call them next time I move.

I second Movers not Shakers. They have moved me twice and are cheap and super nice guys.

Paul,

I just used MOVING YOUR WAY. they were $80 an hour for three guys and a truck. I didn't have to lift a finger, they wrapped my bed in Saran wrap, and were fast and efficient. I have the number if your interested, at the office.

Do movers charge based on location? Am I better off calling a company based in the burrough I am moving FROM or the burrough I am moving TO? Or does it not matter?

I second OZ.

I used them for my last minute move from Bay Ridge to Brooklyn Heights and they were awesomely efficient and really nice guys. I only gave them one day notice and they didn't overcharge me (it wasn't the cheapest thing either, though). They were there on time and the lead mover was hilarious. So, if you are looking for humor in your movers, consider the search over.

OZ! OZ! OZ!

Hey Pals,

I am moving Sunday and I got Movers not Shakers to move me (Oz moving had a VERY pricey estimate! Almost twice what MNS did). Anyway, what is the etiquette for tipping and crap? I never even really thought about tipping movers, but then I read David Sedaris' "Naked" and he spoke about it as a common truth. This is actually the first time I have ever used movers too, so that is also the stem of my confusion. Any thoughts or tips on tipping?

Thanks,

Jeff Hiller

I've used Moishe's before. I think they're expensive (someone else was paying). But man those guys have a work ethic. Plus, they're all kids fresh out of the Israeli army. They are so happy to be here.

Just so you know, OZ was amazing (they moved my entire place in less than 4 hours) and the purposely overcharge in their estimates, my actua cost was over $300 cheaper. But I have heard greatthings about Movers and shakers too.

I tipped 25% because the service was so good, but I hear anywhere between 15% and 25% is the place you want to be--remember to divide the tip between the amount of guys, so if you tip $100 and you have 4 guys they each are only getting $25 each, which ain't so great.

Do not ever, for any reason whatsoever use VANTASTIC. Ever.
I second this. The person who told me about these guys hadn't used them himself, but had "heard" that they were good, I think good meant cheaper than most.
I ended up waiting 7 hours for them to show up and once they did, I had to pretty much supervise them and keep urging them to work, at one point (I was still micro-packing so it didn't occur to me immediately) but I realized that nothing had moved for 20 minutes or so, they were hanging out downstairs on their phones, I'm all for breaks, but they hadn't even been there an hour.
I only had one van load of stuff and nothing too fragile, but my 19" TV was damaged, must've gotten knocked around because the screen was blurred ever after. I finally got everything to my new place and it was affordable, but add the extra stress and damaged TV and affordable morphed quickly into incorrigible.

I want to create a moving company that just moves people. Another company can come to your old place to pick up all of your stuff. I'll come to your old place and pick you up *physically* and put you in my truck and move you to your new home. Paul, if you want to be my first customer and you're still at your old place, let me know, I'll send my movers to your house to come and pick you up.

www.movingyounotyourstuff.com will be my website, gimme some time.

My friend, Dave, is an estimator for Ben Hur Moving - 888.BEN.HUR1 (888.236.4871) - http://www.benhur.com. Call them up and ask for him to stop by. Mention that you know me and he'll still quote you one of the most reasonable rates in the industry.
