Artistic New Directions is sponsoring this workshop for both experienced and aspiring writers led by celebrated playwright and improv chronicler Jeffrey Sweet:
Script Tune-Up - Jeffrey Sweet
Tuesday, March 29 - 11:00am-4:30pm - $75
Have a scene giving you trouble? A story element you can't quite lick? Bring ten troublesome minutes to the Tune-Up. After a concise review of technical approaches (like negotiation over objects, high-context exposition, the violation of ritual and convention, character structure vs. event structure), we'll take on those specific problems. No current project? We'll be talking idea generation as well. Though this is primarily for writers, actors and directors are welcome, too. (Particularly good cold readers.) Actors who would like to audit the workshop and practice their cold reading are welcome to attend for 1/2 price.
Limit 10 students + 6 auditors
This workshop is open to all. To apply – contact ANDReserve@aol.com
Jeffrey Sweet is the author of two widely-used writing books, THE DRAMATIST'S TOOLKIT and SOLVING YOUR SCRIPTS and has taught for the New School, Rutgers, the University of the Arts, the O'Neill Center, HB Studios, the Magnet and Second City. He has won the Writers Guild Award and an Emmy nomination for his TV writing as well as two American Theatre Critics Association prizes, the Outer Critics Circle Award, the Jefferson Award, a "Best Plays" citation, the Kennedy Center-American Express grant and an individual grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for his playwriting. His play COURT-MARTIAL AT FORT DEVENS opens in New York in the fall. Among the actors who have appeared in his scripts are William Petersen, Jon Cryer, Nathan Lane, Michele Pawk, Richard Kind, Helen Hunt, Jill Eikenberry, Michael Tucker, Alan Bates, Ellen Burstyn, Candace Bergen, Austin Pendleton, Shelley Berman, Jack Klugman, Dan Lauria, Jay O. Sanders, Laura Esterman, Megan Mullally, Hector Elizondo, Amy Morton, Gary Cole, Lindsay Crouse and Judy Kaye.
