Though many would not think that improv would apply to a typical stage play, as a director, I know that improv is a necessity to good theatre. One play that definitely requires actors with a solid sense of improv is The Laramie Project, which I am directing this Summer for Haddonfield Plays and Players. While I wouldn't normally post an audition notice specifically to an improv board, I feel this may be an appropriate forum for this particular play. Here's the details:
Auditions: Sunday & Monday, April 2 & 3 (7pm), Callbacks or first read thru on April 4th (7pm) - at Haddonfield Plays & Players, Haddonfield, New Jersey (non-union). Performances are in June.
Award-winning Director, Nikolette Adams, needs up to 6 experienced males (2 late teens/early 20’s, 1- 30’s, 2- 40’s, 1- 50’s-60’s) for 45 male roles and up to 5 experienced females (2 late teens/early 20’s, 1- 30’s, 1- 40’s, 1- 50’s-60’s) for 26 female roles. Each actor in the production will portray 4-9 characters – a seldom seen acting opportunity for a wide range of ages. In addition, the play is primarily actor-driven, an experience not found in traditional scripts. The thrust of the production will be a focus on the reporting of the crime, and the subsequent reactions of the town and the nation.
Auditions will use readings from provided sides which will include a minimum of 3 characters per actor. No monologues (unless included in the sides). No appointments are necessary; however, auditioners are encouraged to register with the director via email.
Rehearsals are generally Sundays, Mondays and Wednesday with a few exceptions. To the largest degree possible, only actors who will work on specific scenes will be called for a rehearsal; the full cast will not be required at every rehearsal in the initial phases. If you want an incredible and focused acting experience with a talented and experienced directing and production team, and are dedicated to excellence, we want to see you at auditions.
Scripts may be purchased from Dramatists Play Service, www.dramatists.com. For directions to the theatre see http://www.haddonfieldplayers.com/ - under “About HP&P”. Here's a very brief synopsis of the story:
In October 1998, a twenty-one-year-old student at the University of Wyoming was kidnapped, severely beaten, tied to a fence in the middle of the prairie outside Laramie, Wyoming and left to die. His bloody and battered body was not discovered until the next day, and he died several days later in an area hospital. His name was Matthew Shepard, the victim of this assault because he was gay. Moises Kaufman and fellow members of the Tectonic Theater Project made six trips to Laramie over the course of a year and a half in the aftermath of the beating and during the trial of the two young men accused of killing Shepard. The Tectonic Theater Project conducted more than 200 interviews with the people of Laramie. The result of those interviews is The Laramie Project, a unique and provocative theatre experience for both actors and the audience.
