Improv Communities

Met Tom from Mod27 at CIF. He's an awesome dude and lives a few miles from my grandparents.

I also met another cool improvisor from Denver, which is where my other grandparents live.

These discoveries could make visiting the family much more fun in the future? :)

Definitely. Please come visit!

Yeah, the Mod27 guys are great. To put it in perspective though, going to see them at their show is the equivalent of seeing a show in Providence when you live in downtown Boston. I'm considering the traffic of Boston here :)

I wish I could see them more often. They don't perform that often and it's often against my own shows or desparately needed sleep. If you come down, I'll make the trek!

Looking forward to the visit. I'll finally be a known figure around here...and I'm approaching my 500th post. Ben's in no danger, though.

You would have liked last night's show. Very different. We had a party for a 50 year old. We had mostly over-40 crowd. We got intellectual! Cool!

Who says short form can't be intellectual? And our long form went positively cerebral!

Just following up on things that made me think about improv communities.
I'm in NC right now and enjoying the great (and very supportive) atmoshere. (I'm sure this has alot to do with the hard work of a few people... but I still want to mention it as a group thing- because the entire group seems committed to keeping the atmosphere).

Last night I saw something that I've yet to see in Atlanta. I saw mixed-race/gender/age teams connecting with each other after a show. Wow! Group identity aside, it's wonderful when you can hang with someone not on your team and not "similar" to you. Down with Frat-Boy cock jokes - UP with team committment to making each other shine!

The teams I saw were very good and though I was road weary and dehydrated, I laughed so hard I choked. (Incidentally, the scene that made me choke was the last beat initiated by a weaker player. The whole team committed to it and it ended up with amazing heightening and profound hilarity).

The NC atmosphere is incredibly inclusive and I was SHOCKED and PLEASED by so many people playing to make others look good. The weakest players looked THE BEST and the best players were phenominal. There are a few things I'm still pondering - but this is my initial reaction. I'll ponder more as the weekened continues.

I'm really impressed with everyone down here. If this has taught me anything its that getting a positive environment going around longform can happen. Yay North Carolina peeps for inspiring and motivating me! I know that they might wish for a different space to play, but I am SO digging the idea of bringing improvisation to places that are not ordinarily about prov. My one problmeski with ALWAYS doing your prov in a theatre/drama space is that only those not intimidated by theatre will feel more comfortable visiting.

Great, now Melissa's coming to see us and we're going to look like crap by comparison.

I'll do my best next week to make North Carolina look good. It's just me being supportive :)

Wow, you forced me to read the journals section. Don't worry, I stuck with the last entry...for the most part.

Thanks for the review, and I agree on price. That's been our major struggle. We're working on solutions for that.

Of course living in a city with a curfew of midnight when you put on an 11pm show is tough enough :) Not like anyone follows that law.

Anyway, great meeting you and hopefully we're bringing our improv communities a little closer together.
