I'm planning a revamp of the front page

I'm starting to plan in my head a bit of a revamp of the front page.

I want to make it a lot cleaner and add a few new features. One thing that I want to change is intstead of having the "most viewed" from the past four days on the front page, I may change it to the highest rated threads started in the last few days.

I have turned on thread ratings for most of the major subforums so that people can get in the habit of rating threads they look at. This will of course have no effect on the journals.

I keep checking the Ratings column in the off-topic forum, and seeing nothing there.

I rated a couple of them just as an experiment, but nothing showed up. I guess it has to have several different ratings so it can average them?

There needs to be 2 or 3 ratings before it shows... so it kinda has to catch on. I think the "reward" of the front page for a highly rated thread, will drive people to use it.

Are you gonna change the IRC colors? New, light, springy colors might be nice.

edit: that would totally mess up my journal font colors. nevermind.

i don't know about other people, but i generally go from the front page straight to the boards. thefront page is pretty static except for the schedule (which i like a lot) and when there is news, which is rare.

i don't know how many hits the other sections are getting (del, chat, pictures, mullaney, essays, etc)

i'd like the front page to be the boards with the calendar (perhaps kept as sidebar), and perhaps it could have the underframe with the categories. if the categories are updated post about it in news.

or... get rid of those categories altogether and convert them to top-priority threads (like the "rules about starting a journal" thread.) Del can fit under improv. Your essays would go under improv journals. Photos could go under New York or Off-Topic. Links could go under News, Questions, or Off-Topic. Perhaps Move News Forum up to the Top (above Improvisation).

those are just some suggestions as a regular user.

And this regular user goes straight to /mb via bookmarks, so he rarely ever sees the front page. As far as I'm concerned, /mb is the front page.

Thats what I thought he was talking about to begin with. I think I've only seen the real front page a few times!

[edit] Just looked now, I'm on it! Yay for my crappy journal!
