If it comes to that, I'm interested. I don't want to stand by and watch the off-topic journal community disappear little by little, for no apparent reason.

But wouldn't you be afraid that you were the one who really disappeared? 'cause this could happen - I don't know anyone, but I know other people who know people ...

It would like require one person who is comfortable with web development, at least with a good understanding of HTML.

I wish I had the required knowledge and skills. If I did, I'd volunteer, simply to keep together the journals I have come to enjoy, the people I've come to care for. And it wouldn't be so much like leaving the neighborhood as it would be going next door for a visit.

That sounded really lame and stupid, didn't it? Never mind, I just realized I really had nothing to say at all. :/

Except that if something like that were to happen, it would need to be set up that each person HAD to contribute a donation to pay the bill, before starting a journal.

I'm still willing to donate to this site, if I can pay some way other than submitting my personal info across the net. Give me a P.O. Box to send a money order to, and I'll give what I can.

I have the requisite skills for the job, but not the money to pay for remote hosting, nor the connection needed to host such a site locally. However, I am conversant with HTML and the rest and would be willing to donate time and energy to the task of getting a new site up and running. It would be a good learning experience for me as well.

I'd hate to pour a lot of effort into the site to have all of the randoms melt back anonymously into the ether anyway, but I'm willing to accept that risk for a chance at preserving some semblance of community.

I would like to volunteer my skills to anyone who would think them beneficial. The operative word being "would like to". I would hate to completely and outright promise something and then actually land that job I'm dying for and then find myself in a position where I can't do my promised duties.

I don't know PHP right now, but it's learnable. That's positive thinking, after all.

Not to say I'm looking for the exit. The move that grandfathered existing journals to continue posting but new ones to be disallowed is like saying "It's not that I don't like my children, it's just that I don't need any more right now, thank you." What could have happened in an alternate universe would be a shutdown of that subforum without explanation or reason, so, in perspective of what could have been, current situation isn't that bad.

I know html, and am reasonably proficient at figuring out what I do not know about webmaking, but I just started lawschool and so I have no time. If someone wanted me to help on weekends or something I could do it. I love my journal, and the journals of others. I do think that we would lose something though by leaving this site. It is the feeling and atmosphere of this place that draws me back. I like everyone here, well not everyone (most people). I like the interplay between the diverse groups, and hearing about improv. I would never have known exactly what it was all about or how you guys were if I hadn't come here and read and read. I love the off topic journals, and forum. I know that mine is not one of the oldest or one of the best, but I still like it, and I am comfortable with the people who currently read it. I am not sure that I could be that comfortable somewhere else. Maybe a paysite for nonimprovers? Don't know.

I have some of the skills, but no time, no money. If anyone needs anything let me know.

I see both sides of the issue, like many people on this board, and as an actor and improvisor I'll stay with the board no matter the final decision, since I like discussing the craft and keeping abrest of news. The IRC is a good tool, a great resource and a friendly community, give or take a few. But does this seem like the Night of the Long Knives to anyone else?

But in an academic sense. No one is Hitler here, just the idea of a late-night purging.

I'm starting to think the Improvisers only journals may be the best way to go. And since I can't offer webpage services, I'm going to shut up now and let it work its way out.

Later...

Hey Mullaney, somehow in my ignorance ,i got this thread and the other one mixed.

Dude, that is WAY too nice of you to offer. This is your house, and house rules stand. If we don't like it,we have to nut up and go.

Like L D said,i would feel like a bigger leech if you started something up ,just for us peeps to go to. After all, this is the Improv Resource Center.

Don't let guilt,or trying to be the nice guy factor into your decsion. You gotta do what's best for the board, and the direction you want it to go.

I knew I was just a guest when I came here, and then started my own journal.

do what you need to do. Richie.

I feel sad that so many of us feel unwelcome and compelled to leave. It's in their right to leave if they want to, but I agree, I don't want this community to split up either. I own my own domain and could offer space and bandwidth for a new board for those looking for a new place to write. I'm proficient in setting up scripts and using php, so setting the thing up is no problem for me, but since I'll be starting school soon, I could just use some help maintaining the place, like moderators and such. Is this alright with everyone? Just want to help out in any way I can. :)

Mullaney,

Like everyone else, I think you're great for letting folks like us hang around and learn about improv on the edges while we keep our journals. But I must say, if you move the journals to an open journal site, I would stop mine.

The whole reason I started writing here and that I have stayed as long as I have is because this community is wonderful. I've had a surprising number of people write to me about things in my journal and I've made a lot of friends. Many of these friends are improv folks and I'd miss them. This community would not transfer over to a journal site. You may get some of us, but eventually the influx of illiterate teenagers would turn it into another livejournal site and anyone with any sense would leave.

I love being a small part of this creative, friendly, intelligent community, and I just don't see being able to find that on ANY site dedicated only to journalling. The reason you have such wonderful people is because of the improv focus. If you take that away, there won't be anything special holding us together except that we were part of the IRC once upon a time.

And no matter what, I'll still hang out here reading all of the improv journals and various threads because I like so many improvisers.
