There's a store on 22nd street, b/w 6th & 7th aves. It's near the middle of the block, on the north side of the street. I used to walk by it all the time when the UCB was in it's old space. I even went in there one time out of curiosity, and I was astounded at how vast and extensive the selection was.

Anyone know the name of that place?

I think that place was called Rose's or something along those lines. Pretty good stuff.

Check Salvation Army stores. You've got to hit them as soon as they get a good haul, because otherwise, the records will already have been well picked over by the gigantic NYC population of aspiring DJs.

Thrift stores are good for cool finds but its pretty hard to find them in relatively good condition.

There's also a place on Essex near Rivington (or around there) you should check out. I sold a bunch of records there last spring and didn't get dick for them, so they can't charge that much.

Also, check Kim's on St. Marks. They have a used record section that's not overly expensive and has a good selection.

Try Academy Records on 10th st around 4th ave. They have a pretty good $1 bin and lots of great stuff in the $5 - 10 range. I always walk away with something great for cheap.

The joint on 22 by the old UCBT space has a wide selction but overpriced. For some reason I thought they went out of business.
Bleaker Bob's in the West village used to be great, haven't been there in a while.

Any thrift or Salvation Army Is worth a shot, especially for classical, musicals and jazz or oddities.

There are a number of used record stores in the East Village - there's one on Avenue A near St Marks, a few on the side streets between 1st and A, and 1st and 2nd (I always pass them, never remember exactly where they are....) I think there's one on 6th street behind my building.

i used to work there! huzzah! now I work for a record company! huzzah!

Seriously- Kim's ain't bad. the used seciton is pretty eclectic. Any of the thrift vinyl shops on St. Marks are pretty good.

Wowsville on 2nd and St. Mark's used to be the best- but that went under- so never mind. (wiping tear)

And of course- try Other Music on 4th st and ? just across from Tower- just talk to those people- they are the epitimy of HiFidelity- but super nice. They will tell you the best place to find anything! very cool guys there.

I knew it all along.

Sean, i think you saw my sizable record collection at my moms house. I own around 200-250 records, including an Sticky Fingers (with the zipper), Sgt. Peppers and two original copies of the White Album (the covers are meh but the vinyl is in excellent condition) and never paid more than $3 for a record, and only a $1 for about a 150 of them. I shopped almost excusively at flea markets - the one down on Broadway and Broome and occasionly ones around 25th. Also Salvation Armies.

At the flea markets there is usually a couple dealers selling antiques and furniture who also has a couple boxes of records and has no idea whats in the box or what they're worth. On Broadway and Broome is a guy who sells all records for $2, but if you buy a couple you'll get a deal. late in the day he marks it down to $1.

WFMU holds an annual Record Fair where you can find some great deals. The last one was in November. Not sure when the next will be, but certainly worthwhile. wfmu.org

Second Coming on Thompson Street off Bleecker--go downstairs--they have great vinyl. There is also a place on Bleecker between 6th and 7th Aves that I have shopped at here and there--they have a pretty good selection, but not super cheap. If you are ever in Park Slope there is a great used record store on the corner of 9th Street and 5th Avenue, tons of dollar bins etc.

I find Bleeker Bob's overpriced for what they've got.

I'm a big fan of Subterranean Records at 5 Cornelia St in Manhattan. They've got a little bit of everything (well priced) but their specialty is 70's NYC punk, which coincidentaly is my specialty too.

Yeah, that one on 22nd is gone. Also on the not-cheap-but-awesome axis is a place on E. 12th St. between 3rd and 4th Aves. (there is a 4th Ave., for a few blocks) which consists entirely of soundtracks. Vinyl and CD.

That place is called Footlight Records and it's where I found my double LP copy of the rare sountrack to URGH! A Music War which was a happy find and very reasonably priced at $20!
